I have the Marlin and it pleases me and does what it is intended to do.The Ruger is more expensive, but I would choose it.GHD is the one to talk to about the .17HMR.

    Best!!

I HAVE BOTH. MY RUGER WILL OUT SHOOT THE MARLIN. RUGER NEEDS A GOOD TRIGGER TO REALLY SHOOT WELL. GOOD LUCK,

I WOULD RATHER BE DUCK HUNTING.

My 17VS is the most amazing out of the box gun I've ever had in my hands!!! I will consistently stay under 1/2 inch at 100 yards and the most amazing thing is that it will stay under 1 inch at 200 yards!!! GROUP AFTER GROUP!!! DAY AFTER DAY!!! I have shot BR and varmint rifles and built or helped build rifles that are ridicoulasly accurate but to get a rimfire with a sorry trigger to do this will never cease to amaze me!! Nothing has been done to it at all other than the bore was cleaned before shooting and I clean it as I would any other gun. No copper fouling yet! That was a surprise to me because I thought it would foul but after 700 or so rounds and several checks, no copper fouling. It's definitly running out of steam at about 180 yards or further! Better hit those hogs in the head or neck for "DRT"(dead right there) results! Don't shoot a fox or a coyote in the shoulder either!! No penetration just explosion!! GHD

Ruger, but then I put a 16X Leupold Tactical on it and it shoots .37 groups. Can't do much better with my Cooper Mach IV with a 36X Leupold Bench.

Get behind early, then you have more time to catch up.

    Sunranchwyo,
GHD just about said it all. I am a big fan of most of Ruger products and I'm sure their .17 is a great product. The Marlin .17VS is hard to beat, and a firearm deserving a good scope set-up. The accuracy is amazing. Due to a lack of funds, I put a Tasco "Lumina" model scope (3-9 var. 40mm)and have no problem hitting golf balls from 100-125 yds. from a rest.

My hope is to hook-up with someone in the near future that can organize a prairie dog hunt. My Marlin .17VS will certainly accompany me on that trip! I would think twice before using the round on any large game like a coyote. Good Luck

Worry is the interest humans pay on the debt of miscalculation.

I have had no problems with the Ruger 77/17. I bought it on a whim so to speak. No problems getting .5 groups at 150 yards on a calm day. Haven't tried further out yet.

The marlin vs is simply amazing. Its a MUCH better shooter than i am. I just put a cheap scope i had laying around on top of it (powerline 3-9x32) but get dime size groups out to 50 yards. I wont try longer shots till i get a better scope and mounting system. Despite what u may see published about the .17 hmr it is NOT a coyote round. Groundhawgdevastation, what scope and rings are you using on your .17 hmr? For now im just using the weaver rings it came with but plan on using the bkl mounting system and a 6-18x40 bushnell on it in the future.

i would get a marlin because they have a patent called micro groove. that makes the rifling in the barrel tighter so its more accurate.
