"Slugging" a .30 Cal bore---
I want to slug the bores on a couple of my rifles (mostly my .30Cal/7.62's) and wanted to know: can I use 00 or 000 buckshot for this? They're the same diameter, right???
Short of that, does anyone have a few lead .30 Cal bullets laying around on their re-loading bench???? I can't find any of the ones I thought I used to have, and don't really want to buy a hundred of 'em. (Funny how things go "Bye-bye" when the wife gets near anything I used to own.....)
Let me know, I'll gladly send along some postage if I can't go with the buckshot thing.

OO Buck. You can also use .32 or 32-20 lead pistol bullets. 0 -
there is a very good article in the Oct issue of shooting times magazine page 72, they show how to use Cerrosafe, this can be used to slug a bore, you can use it over & over & over, should be able to get at any large plumming supply store, sold by the pound. much easier!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!than trying to pound a slug thru a bore, much less chance of screwing something up.>>>>>>>> if you need i could email a copy of the article. 0 -
Ferg-
Please do e-mail me a copy of that article, I'd love to see it. I wasn't to thrilled about the prospect using metal and "pounding" it into a barrel.
Thanks!

Slugging a bore is when take a slightly larger, malleble slug and "hand drive" it through the bore. Once removed, you use a dial caliper to determine what the true diameter is. The reason for this is determining the most appropriate sized bullet for developing a handloaded, accurate round.
For instance, although Com-Blocs are known as 7.62Xwhatever, the usual bore is .311, or sometimes .310, and are usually most accurate with .310 dia. bullets. I've used pulled USGI .30 Carbine bullets for my SKS, these are .308 Dis., but work out "OK", not great, just "OK".
British Enfields chambered for .303Brit are usually .310 or .311 and are most accurate with .312 150 Gr bullets. (IMHO this contributes to an accelerated amount of wear and tear on the rifling for obvious reasons, and I am happy using .310 for "range ammo" BTW the .303 is really hard on brass and does not stand up to much more than 1, possibly two reloadings before it is too far stretched the be re-sized and used safely.)
Most US & NATO 7.62's "slug" out to be .308, and best utilize .308 bullets.
