The SKS's that came in with the Monte Carlo stock or the thumbhole that took AK mags were referred to as "sporters". Other standard rifles were referred to in the same way so that they could be imported or owned in some states. The AK clip-fed ones actually had the word "Sporter" stamped into them at or before importation. The term "sporter" has been thrown around so much since the 1989 ban, it is hard to give a good answer to your question at this time. 0 -
The SKS Sporter you are probably referring to has a thumbhole stock, no bayonet lug, is carbine length and takes AK mags. There may be other "sporters" out there that don't take AK mags. They are decent rifles, although appear roughly made. Very dependable.
