Stevens 520 question
I'm trying to help an aquaintance get his 520 functioning. This is the hump backed pump that was made by Stevens many, many years ago. First , someone had left out, or it had fallen out, the FP retaining pin. Got that fixed and now the slide release won't release when you drop the hammer on an empty chamber. Either firing live ammo, tapping the muzzle lightly on the floor several times, or manually moving the slide release is the only way it moves far enough to release bolt. Is this normal or is something missing , broken or worn? I have virtually no information on them except what is in the old Brownell's repair book(the big green hardbound one) which is a copy of the TM manual and doesn't really address this situation. This is only the second time in 40+ years that I have had the misfortune of working on one of these. Have a sneaking feeling it will be the last!

In my limited experience with pump shotguns (3) it is normal to manually use the slide release button or lever to unlock the bolt in a hammer down unloaded condition. OMIGOD!!!! been promoted to Maj. General.

I'VE HAD THE MISFORTUNE TO WORK ON THESE IN AND OUT OF THE MILITARY, MOST LIKELY SEVERAL PARTS ARE WORN OR SPRINGS NOT UP TO PARE. BEST IS TO BOLT THE THING TO THE WALL. MOST OF THE REPAIR PARTS ON THE MARKET ARE TAKEN FROM GUNS WITH AS MUCH AS OR MORE WEAR THAN THE ONE YOU ARE TRYING TO FIX. 0
