Unfortunately no. I bought one when the 22/45 came out with the same hope.

A friend of mine tried it yesterday. He works in a gun shop and has the luxury of sometimes experimenting with used guns. He has a MKII 5.5" bull; A new 22/45 "Great Eight" came in and he wanted the barrel off of it. He swapped uppers and function tested them at noon. All seemed well and groups were decent. The only thing he noticed so far with over 100rds, was that the MKII lower with the 22/45 upper would sometimes engage the safety when closing the bolt. Could be assembly, could be lube, could be crud, could be coincidence.

So, is the problem he is experiencing why it's said that they do not interchange, or is it not supposed to work at all? BTW, no jams or FTF's at all.

I have had my 22/45 for several years. When I bought it, I took the 5.5" Stainless Bull Barrel off and tried to put it on my MKII frame. It would not begin to fit on the frame. I would like to know if Ruger has modified the design on the newer 22/45 models. I always thought it was dumb that they were not interchangeable.

I bought a Ruger Mark II 10-inch when that barrel length was introduced (in the 1980s?), which I have enjoyed for quite a long time now. When the 22/45 came out, I bought one immediately with the hope that I could put the 10-inch barrel on it. As pearyw says, not even close. Howver, as crudely as these Rugers are made, it could be that sometimes the tolerances stack up and it can be done.

While it is true the two pistols do not accept the same magazines, the difference in the magazines is not the cause, because the magazine bodies are essentially the same and have the same physical relationship to the chamber on both guns. The lug that holds the barrel and receiver to the frame is what kept my two barrels from interchanging. I cannot remember if the fire control parts are any different. I do not recall that they are.
