    Howdy Pards,

I know it's been discussed over and over again but, what are the best ways to remove surface rust from old shootin' irons (without leavin' 60 grit scratches of course)?!

    Thanks,

Break Free CLP,apply heavily and let set over night, then remove all oil and apply again.I have tried and used many lubricants over the years and this is the best stuff Ive seen.CLP(cleans Lubricates and protects).

    Best!!!

I've also used Kroil on light surface rust with some success.

I rub Breakfree or Kroil in with 0000 steel wool (bronze wool is even better, if you can get it). Only rub lightly.

Don't expect much, though. Bluing that's gone will stay gone; steel that's missing will stay missing. You may be able to remove the reddish brown rust, but you can't restore blued steel to pristine condition.

With spot rusting, I have had luck using a copper penny. Not one of the new alloy ones. The copper is harder that rust, but softer than the steel. Again, make sure it is one of the older copper pennies, not one of the new alloy pennies.

Brownell's "Steel White" will remove rust and not attack
the parent metal. It will also remove the finish.

nmyers and 101 have it right. Alternates would br RB-17 or Blue Wonder cleaner, both work well with 0000 steel wool or bronze wool.

I have used a product called "RUST BOMB" from the Conklin company with good results. On the surface rust, spray it on and rub with 4/0 steel wool. For the bore, plug the bore and fill and let set overnite. You will be amazed at the junk that comes out!!! I tried this on a T/C Muzzleloader a couple years ago that you could not even close the bolt! The next day it was free and working and with a bore brush the bore was shining! That stuff is not sold in stores but somebody close to you is a distributor and if you can't get it let me know and I'll send some. It cost's about 7.00 a can but it works!!! GHD

I've had great success with Flitz. My friends have borrowed mine to clean their new guns and the cleaning cloths are orange from the oxide.

Rust Bomb won't effect the blueing. I use it to wipe down for storage also. It's not your typical WD40 penetrating oil!! This stuff really works! A bunch of the mechanics around here use it instead of the run of the mill penetrants. It does a heckuva job on neglected muzzle loader bores. That "Flitz" that was mentioned before is also a super product. It s probably easier to find than the Rust Bomb. GHD
