Depends on how deep and widespread are the pits. Shallow ones can be polished out, but remember you are removing metal and any finish, so it will have to be refinished.

This should be attempted at your own risk. My Mosin Nagant M44 had pitting on the barrel from moisture from the wood eating away over 50 years. I cleaned it all up, used JB Weld to fill it in and painted the barrel and action with Krylon Flat Black. Alot of folks machine the metal until the pitting is gone. Anything serious will render your piece a paper weight. 0 -
Oh yeah, JB Weld can be sanded smooth, forgot to mention that. 0 -
If pitting is not to deep bead blast and give it a matte finish. 0
