Probably the reliability factor of the 357sig is the only advantage, due to the fact that it is a bottle-neck cartridge and feed ramp problems are minimized. The Hydra-Shok .40 155gr has been recognized as the top stopper. There are more selections of bullet weights for the 40. You can't go wrong with either. The cost in weapons and ammo is about the same. The recoil of the 2 are similar, unless you go to a 175-200gr bullet in the 40 which increases recoil.

Doc: Why not both? I have a Glock 32 and purchased a .40 ss match barrel for it. If you want the difference between the two it will be alot like the 9mm vs .45 debate. The 357 sig duplicates the 125 gr .357mag balistics. The .40 is better than the 9mm and some what better than the .45. OK now there will be a .45 crowd that will debate that untill the world stops turning. The 357 sig bottle neck makes it a more reliable round in feeding. Check the balistic charts and you will see for self defences it is a toss up. Shoot both and determin which you like. Ok do what I did and get a second barrel and have both. My 2 cents

I recommend the .40 versus the .357 SIG. Easier reloading, less expensive ammo, more ammo choices. The .357 is an answer in search of a question. No real advantages over the 40

Frankly, I'd either go with a 9mm or jump up to 45 ACP. The 40 S&W is really a compromise, albeit a very good one.

Your relatively speaking of two calibers that run pretty close together Ballisticly.I find them equal in recoil and have confidence in both calibers. There have never been any .40 caliber feeding problems Im aware of but the Bottle neck .357sig is more reliable as far as feeding goes.At one time there were only four or five ammo manufactures that made the sig ammo, but now there are many. The .40 is far more popular with Police agency's but the Sig caliber is gaining popularity with more agencys. The US secret service finally gave up their 9mms for the sig caliber in the P229,along with several more Federal agency's.Civilians tend to carry the caliber that is popular with Police, and as more shootings occur the sig its being praised for its lightning bolt affect for one shot stops. It appears the sig caliber is here to stay.

One more thing I might add,if you want to minimumize Recoil of the .357 caliber, buy a Glock 31.I have the two Sigs you mention and a Glock 31 .357sig.The P229 tames recoil very well, but the Glock absorbs much more.

    Best!!

I would like to respectfully disagreee with the statement that there is no advantage in a 357sig round over a 40.

    My personal experience is that:

    the sig feeds better.....
it hits harder.......(travels at 300fps faster than 40)
    and has noticeable less recoil.

I installed a 357 sig barrel in my Glock 27 and it is by far the best package for CCW that I have found.

The .357 SIG is harder on the gun. For an average civilian, that's not a problem, but departments are reporting cracked frames at about 5,000 rounds, which really is not that much shooting.

i have the p229. it came with a 40 barrel in it and i bought a 357 barrel. in my personal UNprefessional opinion, the 357 hits just a little harder. my tests were on MRE boxes packed tightly with phone books. ten rounds of each into its own box. the rounds were the same maker, both hollow point, and close to same weight. the 357 went about 2" further. i also prefer the round due to ease of feeding mentioned above. as far as frame cracking, i've put over 50000 rounds, ten times as much as MBALAI reports and i'v not had a single problem,no stove pipes, no misfeeds , not one problem. neither has the gun. in short, I LOVE THE SIG 229 IN .357 SIG, AND I TRUST MY LIFE TO IT EVERY DAY

I'd say its a toss-up between the two calibers. One thing I might add that I did not read above is that with the 357 sig caliber, Quite a few people have reported having problems reloading the bottle neck case. I personaly have no experiance reloading the 357 sig case, But going by what I have heard.
I'd say the 357 sig round would have a slight advantage with the feeding,do to the bottle neck design, But on the flipside I have shot the 40 extencively with no feeding problems in the sig sauer pistol.
The 40 caliber has gotten cheap to shoot as it has gotten real popular the price of ammo has fall'en quite a bit sence its introduction. The 357 sig is still costly to shoot, But as it gets more popular the price will be compairable to the 40.
What ever caliber you choose you can always buy the other caliber barrel later. To make the swap in the p229 all that is needed is the barrel, A real simple change over.

The sig 357 is a necked down 40 case to 9mm.
Recoil is compairable in the sig p229 with the 40 and 357 sig caliber.
They also make the sig p229 in 9mm, However you can not change calibers on 9mm because the slide and magazine are different.
Have fun with your choice of calibers, And When you buy your sig p229 I dought very much you would be dissatisfied.
