beginer deer cartridge.
Is a .308 win a good whitetail cartridge for a first time hunter who is 15 yrs old?

If he/or she feels comfortable with the gun it would be agreat rifle for life. But if I was going to buy a starter gun,I would go with a 30-30 or a 35Rem.Im not a fan of the .243 but it has light recoil.
Best!!!

My first deer rifle was .308 BAR. I took my first deer with it when I was younger than 15. I have since aquired many other rifles, but still carry it frequently. If he is comfortable with it I think it's a great choice. It may just be his favorite rifle for life. 0 -

The recommendations are all great;however, I think that Rugsters suggestion of the 30-30 has a lot of merit. It is a great brush gun,and very easy to handle. I have done a lot of hunting in No. MN and used several calibers. I liked the Mod. 94 Win the best for close brush shots. Thats my 2 cents worth. Beejay0 -
The 308 win. would be a great rifle for a 15 year old, Provided He can shoot it good without any problems. Have him shoot a rifle in that caliber and see if it works out ok.
However, My first choice for the 15 year old would be a 270 win. in a bolt action rifle. The 270 win would be a rifle he should injoy for the rest of his life, I'd say if he were to get a 270 win. He would never want to part with it. The 270 win. has 19 foot LBS of recoil versus a 243 win. with 15 foot LBS of recoil. A 7mm rem mag. has 20.2 foot LBS recoil, 300 win mag. has 30 foot LBS Recoil.
These felt recoil numbers above is for a standard weight rifle.
Even If he picks out a rifle that has slightly more recoil then he can tolorate, That will likley be only for the first year of hunting. The more times you go out and shoot you get used of the recoil and the fear of pulling the trigger will be overcome.
Good luck with your choice you decide on.

Depends upon the hunting that will be done. If it is mostly brush and short shots a .30-30 or a .260 Rem would all be good choices. Nothing wrong with the .308, but the recoil is near that of a .30-06. Try to get him a chance to shoot several rifles in different calibers and see what he is most comfortable with. That is likely what he will shoot best.

I find that the 308 is worst than a 30-06 for recoil, for your son look at a 7mm-08 or 260 both very good rounds and don't kick as much 0 -
A 308 is fine. Especially if you get a gun with a nice rubber recoil pad. I don't really like the 30-30 for youngsters since most are wood stocks or wood stocks with metal butt plates. They can be harsh on a boney kids shoulder. Same with the 35 rem (and other lever action rifles). Also buy QUALITY hunting ammo & use it to sight in with. That way theres less chance of missing on hunt day. Good luck hunting which ever way you chose. rg 0 -
One should not overlook the 25-06. Sweet shooting, plenty of knock down. My 14 yr old loves shooting mine, when he says "can we get out the 06, I know he means the 25- ... 0 -
gskyhawk....perfect answer..260 Rem or 7MM-08
The 250-Savage would be an even better choice
where recoil is the main issue.I don`t know why this round is not comming back as a youth
and ladies round for dear rifles. It has less recoil than anything mentioned yet,but good knock down.

Let us not forget that the .30-30 is a little more dangerouus for a beginner considering the hammer and the possibility of the gun going off by accident. Many of the older ones do not have cross block safeties or hammer extensions. My choice would be a .243 or .260 or a modern .30-30 with a decent safety.

my two cents says a 257 roberts. my wife has taken whitetail, muleys, and a cow elk with hers. she is 5 foot tall and about 90 pounds. she says the roberts kicks less than her 22-250

the weight of the rifle comes into play far as recoil goes...i have a winchester mod 70 heavy barrel in 243 win mounted in a choate varmint stalk which weighs well over ten lbs is just like shooting a 22 rimfire far as recoil goes but of cource you dont want to carry this rifle very far :-).

i will start my kids deer hunting with one of my .243 win's when they are old enough as far as your kid goes guess it would depend on how big he or she is and shooting experince sofar.
