.223 Rem. Cartridge O.A.L.
Guys I need some help from you reloaders/gunsmiths. I just finished putting together my AR-15 match rifle and installed a Krieger 24" stainless 1 in 7.7 twist barrel. It was headspaced with my bolt by krieger and rechecked by me using go, no-go gauge set and checked ok.Here's the problem I chambered a round and it got stuck. Upon removal of the round I noticed rifling type marks on the bullet head. This was some reloaded ammo purchased locally(55gr. fmjbt with an oal of 2.260).I tried some of my buddies reloads(55gr fmjbt seated at 2.255)and same thing, bolt will not close. Went to the local sporting goods and purchased brand new 55 gr pmc fmj(2.245 oal) these will close but still notice some marks on the end of the bullet almost at the brass. My question is does this sound like the bullets are too long/throat very short being its a match chamber or could it just be some burrs and reamer marks that will go away as it breaks in?would it be safe to fire the rifle? Please note that with the first bullet(2.260) I had a very hard time getting it out, when I finally did it partially pulled the bullet from the brass. Hornady manual sets c.o.l. at 2.200", sierra manual at 2.250",speer at 2.215". I will be shooting 69gr sierra hpbt's and 80gr sierra hpbt's , these 55gr are just for me to do my barrel break in and to get my sights adjusted. Any info will be appreciated! Thanks in advance. COTW gives an OAL for 5.56 NATO of 2.26". It gives a length of 2.10" for .223 Remington. 0 -
Your throat is too short.

Your throat is NOT TOO SHORT - for your application. This is a custom target set up - not some SAAMI spec. ammo blaster.
Generally, the Low Drag bullets require seating a few thousandths into the lands for best accuracy, certainly not off the lands. In addition, even the common competitive .223 bullets in 68-75 grain category want to be as close as possible - and even very slightly INto the lands for best accuracy. Since NMC competition requires about 40% or so of your shooting to be done 'rapid fire' your ammo must be Magazine Length. The Short Leade or Throat allows you to load ammo to magazine length and still be at the rifling. In fact a new chamber should be throated as short as possible - allowing for a little erosion - (which will occur fast enough) - and still be able to reach the rifling with magazine length ammunition. This is most applicable with the 68-75 grain bullets generally used for the 200-300 yard stages - although they can be used effectively at the mid ranges (500 to 600yards). The Very Low Drag 75 - 80+ grain bullets are too long for the magazine even when loaded in a short chambered rifle - but those rounds are single loaded anyway in the stages where they are commonly used.
Your CHAMBER IS NOT TOO SHORT ! Your AMMO IS TOO LONG!
Best...........!

MadDawg makes some good points; Rem .223 can have quite a wide range of OAL, dependent on which bullet is being used. Hornady V-Max range from 2.20" to 2.25". VihtaVuori's manual sets 2.075" for the Speer 40gr SpirePoint up to 2.244" for Sierra's 69gr HPBT. Benchrest shooters often tune their OAL to what works best for their rig, sometimes a few thousandths of an inch too long or too short makes the difference. What's sold for commercial rifles & ammunition is a result of insurance policy restrictions these days. Keep in mind too that those 80's will be too long to load from a magazine; I've used some 75's that just make it but I don't recall the brand.

Thanks guys! Very helpful information. I spoke with the guys at Krieger barrels and they say the reamer used for my barrel is very common with highpower competitors shooting 69gr sierra's and 80 gr sierra's. I will be adjusting my loads for this particular rifle. Thanks again! Rayzor25 0 -

OK,your throat is too short for the ammo you are using.
Is that a better way to phrase it?
Why shoot 55s through a Krieger 1/7?
