Deer and 250 yards.30/06 all the way.Dont over look the .300 Win Mag either. The most accurate nicest Rifle I have ever fired was an A-Bolt in .300 win mag.

The 270 will be an excellant choice for you. I have shot the 270 for 20+ years for mule deer and elk. Have taken deer upto 600 yards. A lot of people will tell you to go bigger but if you feel comfortable with the gun and can shoot accurately it will do what ever you need it to. The accuracy is what gets the animal not the size of the gun.

Definantly the 30-06 it can be used to hunt most any North American Game.If you wish to hunt Elk or other Game you will have a rifle suitable to do so.

    Best!!

The only real distinction from a shooting stand point is the recoil. The -06 has more, but the .270 is not a softy either. the -06 offers a much greater range of bullets, both interms of weight and shape. That said, I don't much like the recoil of the -06 and shoot a .270. If I want to get beat up, I pull out the 7mm which would also serve your purpose. Try to shoot both and decide which you like/shoot better. That is the one to get.

Myself I have both but prefer the .270 with 140 Gr. taken lots of goats, Deer and tons of pigs with it. While the -06 has more load options, "I think" the 270 shoots flater
    Just my opinion

Both calibers are great for your intended purposes. I just
have a preference for the .30-06 which I have hunted with for
    41 years. 101

If you already have an elk rifle, I would quess it to be in the 30 cal. range or better. Get the 270 and broaden your hunting abilities down to light game. The .270 is an excelent addition to any hunting collection.
The 130 grain bullet will shoot flatter than the 30-06 150 grain and this rifle likes IMR 4350 powder. You'll have less recoil than the 30-06 to make shots easier.! The 100 grain bullet is good for varmits, or you can go all the way to 170 grain bullets. Check out the ballistics and determain if the small grain will be of good use to you in the future.
***Good energy, flat trajectory, good choice*** "In my opinion"!

If you already have an "elk" gun by all means go with the .270. It will take down any deer walking the face of the earth out to 400+ yards. It has somewhat better ranging abilities that the 06 gives up by being a bit more versitile.
