Colt Dragoon
I have a friend who was just given a Colt Dragoon (SN 39XX) by his mother. The story in their family is that one of their ancestors removed it from a deceased Union soldier during the Civil War. They do not know for sure this is true. The pistol appears to be in very good shape - it has some of the original silver finish on it. it is not rusty. I have read a little on the history of these guns (on the internet). Any one have any idea of its potential worth? From what I learned, it is one of the first editions of this particular gun - it has a square trigger guard. He would appreciate any input. Thanks!

I have purchased a Dragoon with a 8 inch barrel from a family with a wedge that inserts from the left. Our other 7 1/2 guns load from the right. In looking on the internet I see both. This gun has period screws and can be traced back to a ancestor. Which is right?Did they make both ways? 0 -
If this is a genuine Dragoon s/n 39XX with silver plated triggerguard it is a civilian model. The barrel should be half round, half octagonal and the cylinder should have oval cylinder stop notches and no U.S. stamped on the frame. The gun could be worth over 10,000 bucks. An expert has to evaluate the gun. 0 -
Be interesting to see this gun...Ten Thousand Dollars is conservative...if its a genuine Colt 3rd Model it could even be worth More...I wish You Luck.....

Thank you, all, for your input. It does have the oval notches on the cylinder and I do not remember seeing a "U.S." stamped on it. I will ask him if I can get some pics and post them for you to see. It is in an old leather holster, as well. I do not know if the holster is as old as is the gun.
Rusty - I will e-mail you.0
