I currently want an M1 and hoping to buy one soon. But I would not give up any of my Ruger Mini-14 for an M1.

I would say the M1 Garand has more in ballistics because it fires 30/06 but that the M-14 is more accurate because it still see's service as a Sniper weapon in the Military.I would think that they are tied for reliability as they use the same basic action but the M-14 is the slightly improved version but I have never heard complaints on either. My M1A is virtually the same thing as a M-14 and I dont think you can own a better all around semi-auto rifle. It is impressive in all respects.

Eric,, I think Quick is refering to the Mini-14 not the M-14.
Quick,, You dont say if you are comparing the Mini-14 to the M-1 Garand or the Carbine? BIG DIFFERENCE.
The Garand is very powerful with the 30-06 round, and is very accurate, but is limited to 8 rounds at a time. Of course you could fix bayonet and close with your adversary.
The carbine has a good magazine capacity, 15 rnds or 30 rnd mags are the norm, but the .30 carb round is lacking big time when compared to the "odd-6". Its a 110 gr bullet at about 1990 Fps.
Either way, I think I would opt for the Ruger Mini-14 as it has a good mix, with the .223 round, of power and magazine capacity, but what you need it for would have a lot to do with your decision.
    Happy shootin -Joe-

Damn I didnt even notice the word mini in there I just saw M and 14 and ran with it.Sorry for my confusion. If its between the M1 Carbine vs. Mini-14 I say go with the Mini-14 for a light, useable, versatile rifle its hard to beat.If you were referring to the M1 Garand there isnt much comparison in power vs. the Mini-14.30/06 is a duster long and short range the .223 is limited in its range when compared. If its for hunting, target, and just to have a great rifle get the M1 Garand. If its aimed at more of a utility type rifle Mini-14.

It would take something as long as a magazine article to describe the answers. Actually, there HAVE been magazine articles written about them. You would benefit from, and enjoy, reading some of the monthly gun magazines. If nothing else, you should read the American Rifleman, which is included with your membership to the National Rifle Association; if you own even 1 gun, you should be a member.
