Off the landings-bullet seating.
I took the new Rem. 700 varmit 22-250 out and broke in the barrel.
I want to reload by getting the bullet .005 off the rifling/landings.
I took a spent case and slid a bullet into it, chambered it and of course ejected it to see where it stopped (hitting the landings). The bullet did not move at all. WHY? Iv'e done this with the 30-06 and the .243 and it worked well. What other method is an accurate way to tell where the bullets are touching the landings for the best reload bullet seating? Why doesnt the bullet move?
ALSO- Would it be best to neck size only with this cal.? I will only be using these rounds in one rifle.
I found this rifle likes 4350, but I'm going to try H-380, I'm told 40.0 grains is good for the Hornady V-Max 55 grain bullet to start. All loads at this time will be with the Hornady bullets as stated.
Thanks!!!!

daddo - take some matches or better yet, a candle, & smoke the bullet before trying this again to be sure the bullet is seated out far enough to be making contact with the lands in the first instance. Seat a test bullet, without crimping, and reduce the OAL a few .001" at a time until there are no rifling marks in the soot. Double check. Triple check. Once you have the max OAL, try a few rounds very carefully. You may need to go to single round loading. For sure, you will want to check every single round you produce very carefully since you are essentially eliminating your margin for error in this dimension. Good shooting!! 0 -
You can seat a bullet against the rifling and measure at the muzzle with a rod. Load a cartridge to max overall length and measure again using the rod. You will then see which way you have to go to set your bullets .005 behind the lands. 0 -
I've run ito this same problem more then once. Whats happening is when you are opening the bolt to eject the case with the bullet, the bullet is sticking to the rifle lands and pulling back out of the case, not giveing you an accurite reading of your overall length,so as you can determine how far back to seat the bullets when hand loading.
Here's what I do an it works great.
First I size a case with a full length die set, But when doing so I dont run the case all the way in the sizeing die, I run it in so about half the neck gets sized only, Then I chamfer the inside top of the neck lightly. Then with a q-tip or match end, I put some super glue on the inside of the neck of the case and run the bullet in just to get it started, with the seater die. Then I quickly stick the case with bullet into the rifle and lock the bolt up. Now wait about five minutes and open the bolt and remove the case.
You need to work fast with the super glue.
Do this twice with each bullet style you are planning on using.
This system has worked flawlessly for me. Took me a couple years to figer this trick out all on my own, Would you believe !!!
With the 22-250 try hodgdon H380 powder 38.0 grains, With a sierra 52 grain HPBT matchking bullet part #1410, And try seating the bullet .030 off the rifling lands. This should be a super accurite load for you.

If the bullet were getting stuck- it would pull out all the way.
Darnest thing I'v seen. I treid this 5 times with the same weird results. The smoke test is not good enough as I am not sure!!
Thanks all- Need sure pruf way- .0 -
Get yourself a neck die for your 250. It will help accuracyand extend case life. Also you might find that you want the bullet seated just touching the lands. I've seen more rifles that liked them that way than not. Try 40 grains of Winchester 760 with your bullets sometime with a Federal Match Primer (210) GHD 0 -
I also sixe the case/nech, whichever you wish, it's just an oal test, so the case is not as important. I then take a bullet, completely color it with a magic marker, and then set it in the case and close the bolt. Now eject it. I don't clean the inside of the case mouth because I want the bullet to be scarred. Now, take this same bullet which has pulled free from the case, and has scars on it. Set your seating die up, and start to seat the bullet little by little until you just cover up the scar created by the mouth of the case when it was inserted the first time. This sets your die to seat the bullets just at the rifling. You should also notice the rifling marks where the ogive becomes the full caliber. You may then wish to back off a few thousandth's just to be sure that the original bullet wasn't jammed into the rifling, and then work forward until you feel comfortable with how a loaded rounds looks after being ejected without firing. small marks are ok, gouges mean seat it back a little.
A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.0
