8mm-06 ackley mauser
i realize that mauser conversions are not a price effective way of making a rifle, but i wondered if anyone has input on a siple sporterization of a 98 style rifle. which of the 98's can i fford to do this to that will handle this cartridge just by rechambering. the existing barrel? most cost effective?

ANY of the 8mm turks, yugos or basically any surplus rifle chambered in the .323 8mmx57 Mauser cartridge.
I have often thought of this because My mauser has EXCESSIVE head space.( really bad)
But I do not want the expense of having it rechambered. ~$400.
the cartridge is excellent for the handloader and is only limited by the availability of the 8mm bullet selection.
let me know how it goes I envy you.

Really, all you need is a set of headspace gauges, the appropriate chambering reamer, and knowledge of the proper technique to use in reaming the chamber. I have never done an Ackley improved, but have done several regular 8mm-06 conversions. This is a very underated, under appreciated cartridge which is capable of taking any game on this continent. Any good gunsmith should be able to do this conversion for you, and the cost should be minimal as it does not involve purchasing a new barrel. 0 -
i have a couple of the 38 turks, large ring. they shoot very accurately~2" with open sights at 125 yards with hot handloads, but my magazines measure 3.15 all the loads i find are listed at 3.25 for the 8-06.
i have a milling machine and a lathe, fairly accomplished with them. is this anything that a competent machinist could do? with out a gunsmith? assuming i use headspace gages and what not?0 -
IMHO just leave it as a standard 8x57 and load it to it's true potential. This cartridge is the 30-06 of the Europeans and will darn near equal the velocities of the 30-06 bullet weight for bullet weight if loaded to it's full potential like the Europeans do.

richbug, if you're a competent machinist, you can do it.
Like mountain man says, you need a chambering reamer, the proper headspace gauges and a copy of the NRA "Gunsmithing Guide-Updated", or the book "Riflesmithing", read what they say about chambering a barrel and go to it. You can probably do it with the barrel in place if you strip the receiver to get the ejector hardware out of the way. I believe Roy Dunlap in his gunsmithing book talks about this conversion at some length, and favorably. These publications talk about magazine alteration too if the round you assemble exceeds the length that the magazine was designed to handle ideally. These projects are a lot of fun. However, the simplest thing to do is what aglore suggests!! Heh, Heh!! Seriously, if you do the 8mm-'06 you might not have to mess with the action rails so that the cartridges will feed properly whereas the Ackley round, if its as I suspect to be fatter and sharper-shouldered at the front end, might need the rails modified.

i have done the "hot" 8mm already and enjoy shooting the mausers very much. i think that i will pick up a vz 24 and give it a shot... moneywise i won't be out much if i mess it up
thanks all

Hey richbug--The NRA book "Handloading" has some helpful info on the 8mm-06. About your last statement--about all that you'd mess up is a barrel. There are plenty of reasonable replacement barrels available!
Good luck,

Couldn't find the 8mm Ackley Imp in his book or in COTW.
He does prefer his 8mm-06 Ackley Imp over the straight 8mm-06. It handles bullets 170 grains and up and uses 5% more powder than the 8mm-06 for magnum velocities.0
