I have an opportunity to buy a nickel Python 2 1/2" in original box 1968 with no letter in the serial number, pristine condition, kept in safe since bought, not fired since factory for around $6K. I am new to collecting and don't want to be stupid. Is this a deal or should I pass on it?

The .38 Special Pythons were only available with 8" barrels. If you want the date of manufacture you're going to have to provide the serial number.
I guess they were top of the line target guns. I have several Colt catalogs and the earliest mention of the Python Target I found was in 1980. They also offered the .357 Magnum Python with the 8" barrel.

The holy grails are the .22LR and .22WMR Pythons. I've never seen one in person but they are listed in the 1981 catalog only.

Although they were indeed listed in the Catalog, except for the possibility that there were a very few made for test purposes, there was never any .22's made or shipped for sale. Too BAD!!!

Thanks Blokey-- I appreciate the info and yes it's my typo-- it is an 8" bbl not 7". The SN# is K05204 and came from a collectors estate.
I am looking to purchase this item but don't want to overpay for it.
Thanks again for your help. Beejay

Yes, you can shoot .38 special in a .357 magnum revolver. However, the most accurate twist rate for .357 is not the best twist rate for accuracy when firing .38 spec. So, the Python Target .38 spec barrel has the optimum twist rate for accuracy with .38 spec ammo.; that is it's reason for being.

Small quantities of Pythons in other caliber were also made. However, the .22 Python, like the Colt Pony .380, was cataloged but never saw a dealer's shelf.

Thanks Neal--- That makes sense. That confirms what I was thinking. Cost wise the .38 is a lot cheaper than .357 for target shooting and practice. Beejay

Actually, you can call Colt and they can give you the date of manufacture and the original finish. I bought an NIB .38 Spl Python Target in nickel. I know I paid too much for it but it's what I wanted so I bought it anyway.

I didn't realize they never sold any .22 Pythons. From the picture in the catalog, it's a shame they never did.

Colt did make a .22 and 38 spec in the Diamonback line. These came in 4, 6 and 8 inch barrels.

Thanks Blokey- I guess that's my best bet. Will give them a call. Not Being Nosey-- but what was the price range on your nib-nickel and when did you purchase it?? Until now I didn't even know they made any other caliber then .357 in the Python. Take Care Beejay

    Beejay,

    Check your e-mail.

Colt's pretty good about the info. I've called them several times and they've given me mfg date and original finish info everytime. I wish I could give you the mfg date of the gun you're interested in but I don't have any reference materials to look it up in.
