Rugster - S&W M-frame
There WAS a S&W M Frame. there were only three models assigned to this frame. They were: .22 Hand Ejector First Model (Ladysmith); .22 Hand Ejector Second Model (Ladysmith); and the .22 Hand Ejector Third Model, Perfected Model (Ladysmith). The .32's were on the I frame.
The term "Ladysmith" as used for these models ARE NOT S&W designations, but were applied to these models by the collectors.
Sizewise the frames would rank this way:
M - Smallest
J
I
K
L
N - Largest
The J frame is a newer size that came out in the late 70's to early 80's.
The second admendment GUARANTEES the other nine and the Constitution!

The M frame Ladysmith was in production till 1921.....
The J was born in 1950 in the form of the Chief's Special (later to become known as the Model 36), the first of which had the slightly smaller (I frame size) grip and trigger-guard. The biggest difference between the I and the J frame guns is that the I frame uses a leaf spring for the hammer, and the J uses a coil spring.
The I frame was the first S&W hand ejector (.32 S&W cal.), and dates to 1896..... The K frame was first introduced in .38 S&W Special or .38 Long Colt caliber (not interchangeable) in 1899 in the name of the Military & Police, or M&P.

Saxon - you are right. I read my chart wrong as for the start date of the J frame. I can screw up too!. In actuallity the J and I are the same frame with engineering changes internal in them. The specs on them are the same. They are the same size, with the only visible difference being in the grips. Internally is something else.
The second admendment GUARANTEES the other nine and the Constitution!
