Ranger .22-These came from where?
Hi everyone,
I've wondered for years where this might have come from. The name "RANGER" is stamped on the barrel. There are no other marks on the gun anywhere.
It has a seven shot clip and a very elaborate peep site (adjustable to 500 yards, talk about a hopeful shot). The rifle is heavily built for a .22, having a 3/4 thickness barrel with a very solid bolt action. The stock is flat on the bottom forward of the magazine, making me think it might be a bench rest type of target rifle. The lenght is 36" and it weighs 7 lbs empty. It is at least 40 years old that I know of. And it is tapped for a scope mount.
Opinions?
Thanks
Mark Gray

Stevens made these rifles for several different department stores. They are good guns but they have no collector value.
Best!!!

I have a single shot bolt action Ranger, have been told by several that they were made by Stevens, Winchester and several others for retail outlets, mainly Sears, Western Auto and various hardware stores. I'm told mine was made sometime in the 30's ... as you said, it seems very well made.

GRAYML,
PER MANY BOOKS, THE RANGER WAS STAMPED UPON FIREARMS MANUFACTURED BY:
SAVAGE
STEVENS
H@R
WINCHESTER
MARLIN
YES, A VERY FINE ARM, BUT REALLY NO COLLECTOR INTEREST. PERHAPS THERE IS A NO. STAMPED ON THE ARM. THIS COULD IDENTIFY THE MANUFACTURER.
WELCOME ABOARD! I WOULD DISMISS VALUE VERSUS FAMILY. 1010 -
this one comes up about every six months. The "Ranger" name has been used on a variety of .22 rifles. The one that you have was made by Stevens, and is mechanically identical to the Stevens 416 target rifle. The wood on the Ranger series was usually not as good as the 416, and the sights were different. I have seen about 5 "Ranger" versions of the 416, and they all came with a high blade front sight, and a Redfield rear peep. The 416 came with the Lyman 17 aperture front, and Stevens' own unique adjustable rear peep. Both are drilled and tapped for barrel mounted scope blocks to accomodate a long Unertl style scope.
I still have 2 of the "Rangers" and 1 416, and they all shoot as well as you can hold. The triggers are not in the same class as the Winchester 52 or Rem. 37, but otherwise they can keep up with anything made.0 -
Does anyone have an old Ranger (or 416 for that matter) that is in need of repair or missing parts that they would like to sell? I have a new 416 X barrel and a new stock for one that I would like to put together into a nice heavy .22. I have all the parts needed, including bolt, except a receiver. Anybody? Thanks! 0 -
Thanks everyone for the info. I've only been on a short time but I've seen that this is truly the "experts" section.
