Ruger Peeples - 10/22 WRM question
Hey folks - Rugerniner, Rugster ...you out there. Did Ruger ever mfg the 10/22 in WRM in the early years (of 10/22s that is) ? Ive come across one in carbine trim, 5 digit s/n, wonderful walnut stock and the (for)end of the stock is a different config than todays carbines. It is cut back towards the top. Does this make any sense to anyone ?

Dont engrave this in stone, but there was a time Ruger released its first version of their 22Mag,but it wasnt called 10/22.The gun didnt survive, not because of it but the cartridge was considered useless.Due to the 22 Hornet,17Rem and the standard 22.Later Winchester Improved the ballistics of the 22 mag and some of the competition had fell off so Win revived it with the Bolt Action.Bill Ruger years later began production of the 10/22 WMR.His designs were always faultlless before he would put them into production.Im not near my Book, but I think it has some collector value.
Best!!

I don't know about the rest of your 10/22, but the stock is a early one made by Overton.Saw one at a gunshow in Portland,Ore.Went to break a $100.00 dollar bill because seller could not. When i came back, he had sold it to someone else. The price was $15.00--He had said he would hold it for me.What a jerk.

I done a pretty in depth search and the only 22Mag Ruger made Prior to the 10/22 was for their Revolvers. However you probably have a unique Rifle. The Bearcat came with two cylinders a 22 and a 22 WMR.The new model Bearcats just have one cylinder and its a 22.
Best!!

Rugster, not trying to start a running gunbattle of words, but I think some of your statements are wrong. Winchester developed the 22 Magnum in the 50's and introduced it in 1958. They did not make firearms for it at first. Ruger and Smith and Wesson both made pistols for it by the end of 1959 and Savage chambered the 22-410 for it. The first Winchester firearm for the 22 Magnum was the Model 61, a hammerless pump action rifle. I may be wrong on this, but to my knowledge the only other Winchester rifle ever made for the 22 Magnum is the 9422 lever action. I do not believe Winchester ever offered it in a bolt action. The 17 Remington was not introduced until 1971, and the 22 Magnum was well established by then. It was not considered a failure when introduced, but was considered a hot new rimfire. The primary drawback to the cartridge was a lack of suitable rifles for it because it operated at quite higher pressures than a regular 22 LR. and not many guns of the day were up to the task, especially the cheaper bolt actions.
Tazmutt, the Ruger 10-22 was introduced in 1964, and to the best of my knowledge was never offered in the 22 Magnum version until 1998 or '99. Wm. E. Workman has a book titled The Ruger 10/22, published in 1994, by Krause Publishing. In it he states that at one point in time the factory had discussed a 10-22 Magnum and considered it impractical. However, at the 1992 Grand American Trap Shoot he says factory personnel had such a gun on display as a prototype. From such information, it is very doubtful that Ruger made any 10-22 Magnums in the early years. The aluminum reciever would not have stood the pressures. Are you sure your gun is an early 10-22 and has a barrel chambered for the 22 Magnum? If it has the regular aluminum reciever, I do not see how it could have been modified to handle the extra length of the 22 Mag cartridge. In my opinion it would be dangerous to shoot, if so made on an aluminum reciever. Workman makes no refernce to a 10-22 Magnum before 1992 in his book. Also, the current 10-22 Magnums are made with steel recievers that have the integral bases for Ruger rings. Is your gun so equipped?0 -
Hey folks - Thanks for the replies. First of all, I don't own the gun yet. I am going to (was going to Mon but got sidetracked) get ahold of Ruger Cust Serv and see if they can tell me anything. The gun is advertised only as 10/22 carbine, but as a VIP gun made in 1966 with a 5 digit s/n. Im thinking I really need this gun (like a hole in hte head) but my wife never batted an eye when I told her of this pending purchase Should mean Im good to go !! The reciever is marked 10/22 and has 22 cal Winchester Rimfire Magnum below it. As I said it has a really pretty walnut stock, which is indicative of the 60's.
25-06 (gots one -o- dem too ) it appears to be alum reciever and does not have the integral scope mounts ...
What would yawl give for a gun such as this ? Unfired (appears) no box if you really need it that is ...
Thanks, Taz0 -

Well ... Same answers on Ruger Forum. Called Ruger today and their records shown this gun as a STD 10/22 made Oct, 1965. No mention of 22 WRM. Said Ruger did NOT produce any 10/22 in WRM ...
Tried calling the people selling it, got someone who knew nothing about guns. Someone will call me back tomorrow

Update - Sheesh ... After all the crap I went through with this, I got an email from the folks selling saying "Oops ... we got some pictures mixed up" They had a picture of a std. 10/22 WRM reciever in with the 10/22 pics ...
Thanks for all your input.0 -
