J.C. Higgins 16 ga. bolt
I am aware of the recall that sears has for the 12 ga. bolts, but does this include the 16 ga. bolt action model 583.21 also? If not, is this gun safe? Thanks, Dan

If I were you I would call their hotline and give them the model brand and serial no.to be certain.

Called sears-they said that the recall only applied to 12 ga. & the 16 ga. was perfectly safe. Am having trouble figuring how there is any significant difference between the same mechanics, and very little difference in pressures. Makes you wonder how one can end up in your face, and the other won't. Any input would be appreciated. Dan 0 -
Having talked to Sears many times (14 bolts, 12 ga now). They expected 1000-1200 bolts to be turned in, total now is at 50,000. Original problem was from a lawsuit suit with a 12 ga not other calibers.
If same could be doucumneted with 16 or 20 ga and suit filed, they might be included.0 -
Exactly what Hoosier said.
This is more "lawyer driven" than anything else; in my opinion, the 12 guage is not dangerous to shoot--just DO NOT be "sighting" down the barrel while cycling the action. If the take-down screw retaining the bolt snaps while you're pulling the bolt back, the bolt slides out of the receiver--no harm done unless you have your face behind it.
(Now watch, some idiot will shoot a Model 10 with some type of barrel obstruction, it blows up and he'll try to sue me for saying I thought it was safe to shoot! After all, I'm answering a question in the "Ask the Experts" forum--implying that I'm an expert...)0
