.455 eley -.45 acp info
Have a Colt New Service in .455 eley with an unaltered original cylinder. Can I use .45 acp ammo with half moon clips safely ?

Yes, you can. You may find the accuracy not to be the best. This can not be done the other way around--to shoot .455 in a 45 ACP. 0 -
Assuming there's adequate clearance at the back of the cylinder, yes.
The diameter of the .455 Eley bullet is .454, and the .45 ACP is .452.0 -
if you so desire, i think i can provide some .455 eley, or reload your empties. let me know at waltsgun@aol.com

In order to fire .45 acp from a New Service Colt chambered for the .455 Eley, it would be necessary to have the backside of the cylinder machined off to provide for the clearance required to accomodate the insertion of the half or full moon clips. The cylinder is machined to accommodate the .890 length .455 Eley cases. You cannot headspace a .45 acp inside this cylinder without modification.
It is my opinion that all of this just to fire .45 acp ammo is an exercise in futility. I have personal experience with exploring this possibility, so I do know what I am talking about.
You can still find some .455 Colt ammo around from time to time. Yes, it is expensive, but after initial purchase, you can reload the cases numerous times. Also, new brass is made by at least one company I know of. It is made from .45 LC cases and works great! Reloading this ammo is easily done with results such as the gun enjoyed originally. Besides, you don't devalue the gun by butchering it.
If interested in this info, email me and I will give you all the info you could possibly need---- padams@aros.net Good Luck!
