Books values and the real world values..ARE NOT the same and they were never meant to be the same. The book will present you with a 'starting' point. There are a great number of people on this site who would be willing to help you do this right simply because they are good people. If there is a big gun show in your area...take one of the firearms and meander around the gun show. If what you have is interesting someone will spot it and they W-I-L-L approach you. BUT DON'T JUMP...move thru the show and get and gather information, do some RECON!

The real value of said items is what a buyer will pay. There are two types of buyers: A) the buyer who will buy low and re-sell high ; the collector buyer, knows the value and will pay a fair market value.

If you really wanna screw this sale up RUSH HEADLONG INTO SELLING the stuff. Proceed as if you were ice-fishing on THIN ICE....

sgroll - I've found that the Gun Traders Guide, while not nearly as in depth as the blue book, often is more in line with what guns are actually selling for. The Blue Book is what most dealers go by. If you are looking to get as much as possible, spend some time one Gun Broker (and there may be another gunsite) and search closed auctions for similar items. You'll get a good idea of what the market is bringing.

SaxonPig is correct, I just want a ball park figure on the value. Unfortunatly I do not have the time to go to the shows. Most likely the whole collection will go up for auction. Except for a few that friends nad relatives wish to buy before hand. There are 2 guns that I am interested and would like to pay fair market value for. 1 Thompson Semi Auto model 1927A1 and a Pedersole Deluxe Double Barrel Blackpowder 10 gauge Shotgun.

    sgroll,

With a collection that large, my advise to you would be to get them professionally appraised. Some will do it for a small fee.
Another option is to get ahold of an auctioneer who specializes in guns and ask him what he thinks they will bring at an auction.

I don't know what you have for quality or collectable guns, but I wouldn't rush in selling them until you have researched them thoroughly.

You could also call a couple of collectors.

I myself prefer the Standard Catalog of Firearms, it seems to give more info on particular guns. I use the books primarily for information on guns and the prices as a rough guide only. I just bought the 2002 issue at a gun show last week for 27.00 and the Blue Book for 25.00

    Good luck to you.

A reptuble gun auction would probably bring the best overall price with the least effort. Some will bring a premium price and you may be dissapointed with some but on average it's good and quickest.

If you could find a dealer near you that would list here on G.B. with good pictures and descriptions you could work out some kind of commission on the work of it and probably do pretty well on the deal.
From what I've observed not to many quality guns are over looked or sold to cheaply.
