I just got one myself in a savage 112 26" bbl, Outstanding Varmint/Deer gun. No problem with 500 yard shots-
GHD help me alot with some cool loads for it. You will not be disapointed with it.
Good luck

Its a fine Rifle for Deer sized Game, you might want to try a few different loads to see what your gun likes best.

jgg, Go to page 13 of topics and look for a post "Pet Loads for 25-06" posted 8/3/02. The loads are listed there. The 25-06 is one of the 2 most amazing calibers I've ever worked with! Deer or antelope sized game with 120 grain bullets and the "Varmint rifle from hell" with 87-90 grain bullets! Am taking this 25 thing one step further and am building a 257WSM now. It won't be finished until later in the fall but just had to try it. In case you're wondering what the other amazing caliber is, it's the 22-250! GHD PS. Let me know if those loads work. I have yet to find a 25-06 that wouldn't shoot the ones I listed and there have been several! 0 -
Jgg, My pet load for whistlepigs is 54.7 gr of 4350 behind a 90 gr Sierra HPBT. Gives 3471 fps at the muzzle, and with 3" high scope setting at 100 yds. is a dead-on hold on a standing groundhog from about 75 yds to 275 yds. Don't expect to win any weigh-in groundhog contests---this load has a tendency to cause substantial weight loss!! My son loads his gun with 48 gr of 4350 behind a 117 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip---14 deer with this load from 60 to 300 yds.+, and NONE have ever taken another step! The point of all these responses is you need to tinker with various loads close to these posts to find out what your particular rifle likes best, BUT, always use boattails--much better accuracy ! I agree with GHD (almost)--you own the finest cartridge for your use 0 -
Well i have used that calibar for a couple of years now and has done fine work on all the deer i have shot with it. 0 -
The 25-06 is a GREAT on anything through deer size game. 400 yds is no problem in open country. Mine is a 98 mauser action custom with a 4-16 scope. As others have said, play around to find the load yours likes best for your use. Good Hunting.
