CIVIL WAR pistol
I need to talk to someone who has some knowledge on antique firearms. I found a Starr arms 1856 44cal ball and cap pistol near an old historic fort. The seriel # can be read in 3 places, it is still loaded and is in GREAT SHAPE especially being that I found it under a rock in a pasture. I want to find out what its worth. I've heard of one in worse shape than mine that went for over $50,000.

Sorry to say it sounds like you're probably being misled. An 1858 Starr Army in good condition is worth about $1500. Your loaded cylinder is likely pitted from having been loaded with black powder so long. Being loaded it's still dangerous, especially if there are still caps on the nipples. 0 -
Not to mention which, if it were from a National Historic Site "historic fort" some gov't types might believe you didn't have a right to it. I know they can get pretty ugly about folks picking up expended lead balls & other items from these places. Not passing judgement here, just a caution about broadcasting the provenance. 0 -
I think someone has or is trying to mislead you..I've seen many 58 STARRS in my day and have owned 3 or 4 over the years...Even a Factory Engraved Starr Army .44 Caliber Model 1858 is bringing less than $5000.00 in excellent Conditon....A standard Army 1858 in .44 in Double Action in Excellent Condition is Only $1500.00..Tops and with Historical Documentation...The Model 1858 Starr Navy Model in .36 caliber are only bringing about 25% More...
The 1862 Army Model in .44 caliber is the same as the 1858 Navy in value.
And if you picked this Revolver up in a National Park or near a National Monument You stand the risk of a HUGE FINE and up to FIVE YEARS of Rock Hockey at a Federal Slammer...! That means you lose all further rights to own Firearms in the Future....

Rock Hockey? Love it, Capt.! 0 -
"HUGE FINE and 5 YEARS"??
Captkirk, did you pull those figures out of your pants?? Where did you study law? NPS says anyone who takes "anything off NPS property, or even so much as picks it up, will be fined the value of the item (up to $100,000) AND up to 10 years". It's called the ARPA act!
Before you spout off about stuff you don't know, do your research!
and by the way...it wasn't found on NPS or National Monument property. Thats why I included the phrase "near an old historic fort". Scroll up and READ.
All I want is advice about the gun. If I wanted advice on "LAW" I would have asked someone at a "Law" or "CRIMINAL JUSICE" forum.0 -
