AR-15s??????

Eugene Stoner came up with the original concept for the AR-15/M-16, although it was a little bit different rifle from the current models. The Air Force first contracted for the AR-15 in the early 60's, and when accepted by them it was designated the M-16. Since then different modifications have been made resulting in the current M-16A2. The AR-15/M16, it's successors, and variants have been manufactured for US government use by Colt (the first and largest manufacturer), General Motors Hydramatic Division, Harrington and Richardson, Bushmaster, and Fabrique Nationale, (maybe others that I don't know of). There are a number of manufacturers, including some of the above, making AR-15s and variants for sale to individuals. You will find all sorts of different opinions as to which one is best, but if you go with a reputable manufacturer I am sure you will be satisfied. I have a Bushmaster and it is a very nice piece and shoots great. I have heard only good things about the Olympics. I think the Colts are overpriced, as some buyers want the "original" and are willing to pay for the name (while not neccessarily getting a better piece). My advice? Look at a few different makes, (the ones you mentioned are all reputable companies) check the fit and finish,
shoot them if you can, and then make up your own mind based on what YOU like.

It's a bit interesting to me, about the "original" AR15. As I recall from years back, actually the 1964 Gun Digest, Armalite was actually the first maker of the M16. Colt got the big contract. I'm of the opinion that Armalite was the original. Any experts, please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm going from memory from years ago. It sure seems like that's what I remember from the '64 gun digest.

Of course I'm not saying Stoner wasn't the original designer, but I think Armalite was the first manufacturer.

the general rule for good ar15's is a-b-c. armilite, bushmaster and colt .i add an r in my rulebook . rockriver arms . they also make a very good weapon .to choose one you have to know it's uses .if i were doing it over i would start with a bushmaster . excellant gun , decent price .it has a chrome lined bore and chamber to yeild years of trouble free service .

armilite won the race for devoloping and producing the m-16.but lost the gov't contract to colt .

I have an Olympic Arms AR-15 rifle that has had approx 1000 rds through it. It has never malfunctioned in any way and i can go 10 for 10 shooting clay pigeons at 100 yds, with open sights. For me thats all i could want. Good luck

I have to put in a plug for DPMS as well; my $ 650 lo-pro groups Sierra 69 BTHPs in .625 at 100 yards all day. The Rock River A2 groups the same bullet in 1" at 50 with open sights; I've got under $ 600 in it.

If you want an out of the box good shooter I would go Bushmaster. If in fact you want an out of the box good shooter that is not of AR 15 design, I would go with the AR 180B from Armalite. I would not say the AR 180 is better, some would, It is different. My 2 cents.

I would go with a Mini 14 myself. I shot a ar15 for the first time this year. I had a hell of a time looking through the sights. It was like my face was too big to get close enouph to the stock, to see into the sights. I asked a buddy of mine who was in the Army about this problem. He said some people do have this problem, and you have to hold the gun at a angle to shoot. Anyone else ever had this problem?

Put me down for Bushmaster, Colt's are cool, but overpriced.

Its Bushmaster all the way! mil-spec, top of the line and the cool factor of the logo must be considered! I'd reccoment them weather you are build from scratch or buying a complete weapon >>>
