My kids 13 and 15 shoot my M1A till their board hitting a 15"x15" steel plate at 200 yards with iron sights. Then I move them to paper and group sizes at 100 yards, that always leads to help on the reloading bench where they both feel they each have a recipe thats better than the others. I cant ever remember the rifle jamming.

The M1 rifle is not the same gun as the M1 carbine or the M1A rifle.

The M1 fires the .30-06 round, suitable for target shooting and most medium and big game found in North America. For many years it was used for target shooting out to 1,000 yds. Extremely reliable, many credit it with our victory in WWII.

Thousands of deer are brought home with it each year. Downside is that it is heavy, requires special clips, and mounting a scope is difficult.

My comments only apply to M1's made by the 4 US manufacturers.

    M1A/M14
    M1 Grand----
    M1 Carbine-- (good paper punch)

I am assuming the original post was about the M1 Rifle. I had lots of experience shooting the NM grade M1 Rifle in the 1950's and 1960's. The rifle is very reliable. The issue grade rifle will shoot better than most shooters can hold. The army considered the maximum effective range to be 500 yards. It excells at the role for which it was designed, as a combat rifle. Weight and sight limitations make it inferior as a hunting rifle.
