The cracks usually come from attempts to rebarrel. The originals are really in too tight and is in the removal that the problem occurs. First check bbl date. If early, it is probably OK. You can make a simple test.Brush some gasoline or kerosine on the receiver where the bbl is inserted (do it outdoors, of course). As the liquid evaporates from the surface, it will leave a line if and where a crack exists.
Aside from this, the 1917 is a super strong action. Many have been reworked to Weatherby Magnums without problems.
    Have fun, be careful

i know the early springfields (LO-numbers) had this problem, not the 1917 enfields.

An Enfield almost killed me 5 years ago. If you want one rebarrelled, have it magnafluxed. I would go so far as to magnaflux it again after the new barrel is installed because screwing a too tight barrel shank can create cracks also. That's what happened to mine, it split right thru the scope base holes.

Thanks for the info guys. The serial number of this rifle is #402219, and the bbl is marked 12-17 at the end of the muzzle. Is this the date, or do I need to look elswhere? Thanks, Dan

That is the correct date. I also believe that you have nothing to worry about as long as you don't disturb the original barrel.
