What is a 7.62x25 ?

I know that this is a handgun round, but what is it. Is it any good?

Its a light weight high velocity round originally in the Russian Tokarev pistols. There was also a drum fed rifle called the Sr-41 chambered in 7.62x25.I wouldnt want to get shot with one but its out dated. For defense it could be sufficient and is alot better than some rouds out there but I think I would rather have a 9mm Para.If memory serves its a 30grain FMJ traveling about 1700fps in a bottle necked cartridge.I read it contributed to the development of the .357SIG.

From what I've read on it, its pretty much what E.W. described. Over penetration is easy to accomplish, cool! Not so common anymore, but a good round just the same.

The 7.62X25mm was the official Soviet pistol cartridge adopted in 1930 for the Tokarev Model TT-30 and modified Model TT-33 automatic pistols. The pistols are a Browning-type desing similar to the Colt 45 Auto pistol. However, these incorporate many original feature, to simplifymanufacturing processes, and must be considered an advance over Browning's original patented dessing. These pistols often have a crude finish, but are well made and of excellent design. These have a 4-1/2 inch barrel and a magazine capacity of eight rounds. Large quanties have been sold as military surplus. Some were made in Communist China and Hungary, as well as in Russia. The Hungarian-made Tokarev, in a modified form called the Tokagypt, is chambered for the 9mm Parabellum catridge. The Chinese began exporting both pistols and ammumition to the United States in 1987 at very reasonable prices.
in general, the cartridge is very similar in dimension to the 7.63mm(30)Mauser and most brands of Mauser ammunition can be fired in the Tokarev pistol. The 7.62mm Tokarev is a fair field cartridge for small game with good velocity and flat tragectory, but needs softpoint bullets for maximum effectivenss. The handloader can use loading data for then 7.63 Mauser. The Speer 30 caliber plinker bullet of 100 grains make a good hunting bullet, but because it is slightly heavier then the standard weight, it must be loaded to lower velocity.
Chinese and Russian ammunition are steel cased and Berdan primed with corrosiver primer. Such amunition is not reloadable. But check with Hansen Cartrdge, they had imported quantitie of this round with reloadable cases and non-corrosiver Boxer primer.

my mistake the S&B data is 85grn. FMJ @ 1647FPS.

We just had a police officer killed with a cz 52 about a week ago. One shot in the buttocks and I guess it traveled up through his internals, or hit the femoral artery. I heard 2 different stories, but it was the same caliber.
Thanks, Grizztribefans@sssnet.com0 -
The same 7.62x25 cartridge was used by enemy forces in Korea in Bolo Mauser pistols, Tokarev pistols, the PPSH 41 submachinegun and the Suderev submachinegun. I put a round from a Tokarev through a railroad tie and was impressed. Wounds at close range are said to be "pulped". 0 -
I beleive Tokarev and the SR-41 drum fed 7.62x25 rifle were used in Vietnam by the V.C. if I am not mistaken.

Come to think of it I wouldnt mind having a CZ-52 with how cheap they are.Are there any hollowpoint loadings for it?
Eric S. Williams0 -
Hollow point loads are only available to the re-loader...I think. Everything I have found about the cartridge is 85 and 90 grain lead capable of 1300 - 1856 fps, ..Factory loads?. CZ-52's and Tokarov pistols are for sale here on the auction site. Is an antique pistol worth sport shooting at the range...? I have found new out of a crate surplus at I think Southernohiogun . com (????) "Excellent Cond." $119.95 to a FFL. (CZ-52 52' - 54' manufacture....?)
I have just recently learned about this famous round. It fascinate's me. I didn't know it was on the C&R list with the BTAF. ??
I have found no ammo that's (sp) Berdan primed, though I've been warned about it. All ammo I have found is non-corrosive, Boxer primed, 100% reloadable etc.....New manufacture.
Why aren't any "Modern" guns still chambered for this?
Does anyone here have any experience with shooting a CZ-52 or Takarov pistol chambered 7.62x25?0 -
One of the reasons a modern pistol isn't made in this caliber may be due to the long length of the cartridge which makes for a fat grip especially if you're going to double stack them. The Tokarev worked around the problem by putting the whole firing mechanism in a small module at the top rear of the grip frame.
This cartridge first came out for the 96 Bolo Mauser pistol having a box mag in front of the triggerguard so length wasn't an issue. While Barnes, in his Cartridges of the World, shows a difference between 7.63 Mauser and Tokarev cartridges, Chinese and North Korean forces made no distinction for the Mauser96 pistol-standard or Schnellfeuer, Tokarev or the PPSH41 submachineguns. It was issued in a 72rd cardboard box,the capacity of the PPsh drum. Incidently, drums were rare & the 32 rd stick mag was more widely used.
Im not surprised some of the same weapons were used in Vietnam, these actions were overlapping. The French had their hands full there before we got into it. The 96 Mauser pistols I saw in Korea were mostly used up junk so I doubt many were found in Vietnam.0 -
I have a CZ-52 that shoots the 7.62X25 ... its quite possiably the most under-rated military surplus handgun currently avaiable. Although the 7.62X25 is a fairly hot round ... comperable to the 9mm largo IMHO, the delayed blow back action (simular to the HK-9X & MP5 design) makes them very accurate and plesant to shoot ...
I expect wundudnee to pop in anytime now and rave about them! >>>

At one time this was the most powerful handgun cartridge
in the world, as far as energy figures are concerned.
The invention of the 44 magnum, took the title away, and since
others have surpassed the 44mag. However, the gun is a nice
easy shooter, and will even shoot the 7.63 mauser round.
The mauser round, is not as hot.0 -
I thought the .357magnum was the most powerful handgun until the .44magnum came along?
