They do indeed look strange. The pistol was designed by Louis Schmeisser and first appeared on the market in 1907. It was produced by Rheinische Metallwaaren und Maschinenfabrik, Sommerda, Germany. It was named the Dreyse after the inventor of the Dreyse needle gun. The only really major change to the pistol during it's manufacturing life was to the internal firing mechanism in 1914 involving the striker and it's spring. The pistol is generally marked "Dreyse Rheinmetall Abt Sommerda" on the left side of the frame, with a monogram "RMF" on the grips. Early models may be found with the inscription "Dreyse Rheinische Metallwaaren und Maschinenfabrik Abt Sommerda" while models made during or after 1914, after the company had adopted the shorter name of "Rheinmetall" may not have the word "Dreyse" at all. You can probably date yours pre or post 1914 by the inscription. Production of Dreyse pistols (there was also a 6.35 mm and a 9 mm, all of similar design) ended in 1915. They were still being advertised for sale in the early 1920s, but production never resumed. One in 98% original condition is worth approx. $195.
