reason i ask is i found one on an auction that said has less 100 rnds through it .....something to stay away from or not? guy says that he decided it was to heavy for hunting and went with a carbon barrel in 300 ultra mag if i remember right. it is what i have wanted for one of my rifles but very leary of buying a used barrel.

It's a superior barrel. Disregarding the 100rd stated history, I would be leery of a used magnum velocity cartridge or 220 Swift or target shooting caliber. If it's a bargain, you could take the chance and should it not shoot, sink the chamber an inch deeper to bypass the worn throat and rethread the barrel. 0 -
Harts are the best. Just don't know if I'd get a used one if I were you, I'd really have to check into whether or not it was abused. It the rifling's still good, and your going to have it cut and rechambered, I'd say go for it.
If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

You don't have to buy anything sight unseen. You have the right to examine the barrel to see if it is as represented and if it will meet your needs. Three (3) days is normal, so you can arrange with a gunsmith who has a borescope to look into the bore, throat, chamber and crown. He will probably charge something for this as it uses up his time and borescopes are expensive. Just make sure that the seller is aware that you will using the 3 days to examine the barrel. If you choose to return it, it must be in the same condition as it was when you received it. You will also be expected to pay for the return shipping and insurance.

cowdoc, I have seen great Hart barrels and then some that weren't so great! A lot of the accuracy comes from the machining of fitting the barrel to the action. A 100 rounds shouldn't have done significant damage to the barrel if it was 100 rounds put through there with a good breakin procedure. If you're going to rebarrel why not go ahead and get a match quality barrel from the manufacturer of your choice and have the best smith you can find fit it to your action? Then you won't be wondering if you did the right thing or not. If it is a Hart match barrel chances are it's all right. GHD 0 -
it is a match barrel emailed him about break in sounds like it was done the right way the price is about half of new including the chambering ect ect. said it grouped 1/2" with factory ammo forgot to ask the twist rate emailed about that will wait to see what it is. then decide
GHD what barrels do you prefer? friend of mine that is a state trapper has used some from an outfit out of montana i think but cant think of the name of the outfit.

cowdoc, I like Hart's match barrels fine and it sounds like this one is a good one. I have used Shilen, Lilja, and Douglas as well as Hart. And to be quite honest, have seen all of them do extremely well. If everything is smithed right and the barrel is of acceptable tolerances to qualify it as a match barrel then they all should do fine. I don't know who that Montana barrel maker you mention is. Good luck on the rifle and let us know how it shoots. GHD 0 -
What caliber is this barrel? 0 -
The two that I came up with quickly are:
Montana Rifleman Barrels
Lilja Precision Rifle Barrels
