The .270 at long range??
Just got up from the lazy boy after reading an artical in last months "Gun World". In an artical by Chuck Taylor, whom i highly respect and enjoy reading articals by, he stated his favorite handful of cartridges that he prefers for long range (read 600 yards plus) shooting and hunting. Amongst these were the .270 winchester and .270 weatherby. I was curious if he is correct that these are excellent long distance rounds? he included a photo of himself with a nice mule deer buck taken at 805 meters with a 270 weatherby. was this a lucky shot or does the 270 really have a 900 yard reach (and beyond)?? Also, the .270 WSM seems to be loaded hotter than the standard 270 winchester, and would it serve just as well or better at these long distances?? thanks for reading my short novel here
any help is appreciated

I have a 270 remington and have got several mule deer at 500 to 600 yards. If you know your bullet drop and have good bullet placement anything is possible. A bigger gun isnt going to make a difference if you dont know how to shoot it. Any gun at distances over that is going to lose knock down power and not be efffective without good bullet placement.

The .270 is a good gun, with 130gr bullets it is effective at long range. But for large North american game,One Author and Ive heard guides say the .308 or 30-06 is the minimum they would call adequate!!
Best!!

reb8600 has said it all in a nutshell, it's not as much the caliber as where you put the bullet. I have seen boys put down full grown whitetail, at 450yds, on crop damage hunts, with a 22-250. The 270 has plenty of horsepower, as long as you can focus it. It also has great BC ratings.
A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.0 -
I have taken several Deer with my 270 Winchester at what I would concider long range (300-400 Yards). The 270 is capable of allot longer ranges than I shoot but there are allot better calibers out there for this purpose. I however do no think that 300 - 400 yard shots should be the norm at any game animal, Targets are another story and long range shooting is just plain fun. I like my shots to be 200 yards or less if at all possible and would not concider shots any longer than that unless conditions are ideal. This is just my opinion and $.02 worth 0
