I've always been lead to believe that the "6" means stainless steel. I've only seen nickel on Smiths w/o the "6" pre/suffix.

This doesn't mean that there couldn't be exceptions though!

The "629" should be stainless steel. Though I have seen
some that have been polished, and look like nickel.

If you want to see a S&W 629 that's a long ways from stainless finish.
Go to the Smith and Wesson web page.
Then go to Performance Center and you will find the S&W 629-7.5" Stealth Hunter. Not an ounce of Stainless to be seen here. No siree, she's all decked out in Birdsong Green "T" finish on the frame and barrel and Birdsong Black "T" finish on the cylinder.

Yes, you don't see it, but it is made of stainless steel.

Correct, bama55,--6 is stainless. Models 66,686,625,629--all stainless. The lack of a 6, or a 5, indicates carbon steel. Models 19,586,25,29....etc.

Adding a "yea" to the "6 means stainless" vote.
I worked for a PR firm with Smith as a client. 6 at the
beginning does in fact mean it is stainless steel, including
the stealth. She just has that green finish on top of it.
And it all started with the model 60...
bwa you are correct to be suspicious. I never bid when the
seller posts mis-information, unless it is really cheap cuz he
    don't know what he's got.

    Bama55,
You are right about the base metal being stainless, but if you'll notice I said "finish".

    Spring Creek,

You did say finish. But, some people mistakenly refer to
stainless as "stainless finish". By the way, that Stealth looks
    good. Do you have one?

marine: I miscommunicated in saying he had it "listed" as nickel. His auction page actually omits the finish or type of steel; it was in an email that he told me it was nickel. Sorry about that. I'm sure that Saxon is correct that it is an honest error.

BTW, experts: Of the two types of metals you've mentioned, is either one stronger than the other?

    bama55,
No I don't have one "YET".
Each day I go through a long list of reasons why I should have one, though!

    bama, spring,
I am with you both...I was in love with the Stealth Hunter when
I first laid eyes on it...then I took a tour of the Smith factory
including the performance Center...got to handle one...beautiful...
smoothe...I had to change my underwear.

    marinebadger,
That was my reaction the first time I handled one also.
I guess that should answer the question for us.
To save the hassle of washing "soiled" underwear, we might as well bite the bullet, pop the piggy bank and go buy one.
