Unusual Barrel "Whitneyville Armory"
I thought this would be a great place to ask what this barrel was originally intended for. It measures 28 inches from the tip to the end of the chamber.
It is marked "Whitneyville Armory, CT U.S.A."
and has no other marks. There is a dovetail cut for the rear sight and a dovetail (small) and a larger dovetail cut on the top and bottom on the end of the barrel. It is an unusually heavy and thick octagon barrel. On the threaded end there are notches on the top and bottom, the bottom being very wide and the top much narrower. The threads look to be about 14 per inch and square.
This particular barrel looks like it has never been installed. The rifling looks brand new, bright shiney and no marks, pits or other indications of shooting. The surface of the barrel still has about 50% or more bluing, but does have some areas of light pitting from some surface rust. I picked it up hoping to use it on a receiver that I have, but the O.D. is too small. Anyone have any idea what it may have come from? Possibly its worth. I was thinking a very early lever gun due to the dovetail on the bottom of the front.
Thanks for any info.

Sorry, forgot to mention that it appears to be chambered in 45-70.
Thanks

Sounds like your barrel may be from a Whitney-Kennedy large frame lever action rifle. Caliber could be .40-60,.45-60 or .45-75. Its been several years since these were made, (100+ years). If it is an orginal barrel from a Whitney rifle, you may a valuable piece. 0 -
You may be right about the 45-60.
A 45-70 shell fits perfectly but will not make the last 1/4 inch or so without a little bit of pushing (which I am not gonna try!!!). I have several guns with octagon barrels, this one beats them in heaviness by almost double.
Thank you for the info.

The dovetail cut on the bottom of the barrel indicates an attachement point for the full length tubular magazine of either the 45-60 No.1 sporting rifle or Whitney-Kennedy rifle. Both are lever guns. Otherwise it could have been for one of their single shot Sporting Models. 0
