What caliber would you recommend for a 10 year old female for a beginner rifle capable of taking whitetail deer? 0 -
.243 Wichester,or maybe the right 30-30 Winchester. The .243 would be easier shooting with less re-coil.Any bolt-action will do maybe Savage or Remington Compact models.

Come to think of it for a younger girl take a look at a Ruger Model 96:lever action .44magnum.I dont think it will be as hard in a rifle on the shouder. The .243 is light but can still bust a small shoulder good.At what ranges will you be hunting? The 96 will do fine within 100yards.Just shoot hard cast rounds no JHP.

thick brush with shots of 100 yards max. I didn't even think about the 44, thanks for the tip. 0 -
In those conditions the .44mag in a rifle would be optimum. The Ruger 96 is good and its ready for a scope retails for around $450.00 wih a 4 shot capacity.Very compact and accurate and a .44mag out of a 18.5"barrel sends alot of damage on the way.

That Ruger Model 96/44 would be a great starter rifle as well as usefull for hunting in thick cover. My 2 cents I would recommend the 44.
Best!!

The old trusty 30-30 of course! More deer shot here in Pa. with the old 30-30 then any other caliber by far!!! The only drawback for a beginner might be the hammer, but why not teach them early how to shoot a hammer gun. 0 -
I would still go with the .44mag in a rifle.I dont think your daughter would like shooting a 30-30 much. For a young shooter the re-coil can be disconcerting and contribute to inaccurate shooting.Aglore how much we talking here?..lmao.

When I started deer hunting at age 12, my dad bought me a .223 caliber rifle to shoot. I killed many deer with the rifle although it is small and often considered underpowered. It has a significantly light recoil which will allow beginner shooters the opportunity to form good shooting habits without fearing sore shoulders from high-powered rifles. Good Luck:) This first hand advice from my daughter. You can't get better than that. The 223 works well if used carefully and with the right bullets.

I would agree with the .223 or the .243. Get something with light recoil, if the kid is flinching she won't do anybody any good. God I hate searching for crippled deer. I am 6-3 and 225 and I am always surprised at how much that .30-30 kicks. I have a 30-06 that I swear feels like it kicks less than the .30-30. I hope you would spend a lot of time with a child like that at the range shooting at a deer silhouette and if she can't make 5 killing shots in a row at 50 yards, wait till next year.

Can I put my two cents here. I would go with the 44mag, but go with a H&R single shot rifle and put a 1.5-4X32 scope on it. They are good rifles. I use them when I can get a chance too, and I have a 30-06 with a BSA scope sighted in for 150 yds.
The specs are:
stock: American hardwood pistol grip stock with walmut finish with recoil , sling swivel studs
Sights: Ramp front sight, fully adjustable rear, tapped for scope mount
Barrel Length: 22"
Length: 38"
Length of pull: 14-1/4"
weight: 7Lbs.
But you might can get a youth stock for this rifle, which will bring down the length of pull to 11-3/4 and you can buy extra barrel for it, in shotgun guage and other cal also. But keep the old stock because she will be needing it when she get older. The other cal you can get is 22 hornet, 223 Rem., 30-30 win, 45-70 govt., and 44 Rem Mag. The scope rail are extra sometime and they are $15.95 including hammer extension. You might be about to pick one up with scope for about $300.00. Buy a good scope for it.
Just my two cents.

The .44mag idea is very good.I have also seen children take Deer with the .22-250 they need alot of training with this round but that wont do anything but help.It is a very light recoiling round but travels very fast.Another good option is a .410 Shotgun loaded with rifled slugs.
