HK USP with ambi safety?
Is the HK USP available with an ambi safety? I am a left-hand shooter and I am use to carrying a 1911. I wanted to purchase a pair of the HK USP in 40SW but would REALLY like to have it with an ambi safety. I don't mind it having the decock feature. It's actually kind of cool. If HK does not produce this from the factory, does anyone make an aftermarket accessory for this?

I am looking into HK's right now myself. The safety lever on the Variant 1 can be reversed from left to right for left handed shooters thumbs on the same gun.For cocked and locked carry with either hand.

If EW is being literal in what is said, it is incorrect. The control lever on a H-K USP cannot be reversed from side to side. New parts are required to have a lever on the other side. H-K sells kits to convert the USP to any of the nine or so control configurations in which it is offered. I installed factory ambidextrous controls on my USP, which I bought as a Variant 1 (the "standard" configuration with the control lever on the left only). (Why H-K does not just sell the USP with control levers on both sides to start with is beyond me. Many handguns, like the Beretta M92, S&W, etc. come with two levers.)
The ambi kit is easy to install and cost me about $50 as I recall. The USP is a great pistol. Mine is a .45 and is one of my favorites.0 -
Woohoo!
I'll look into that. That's the only thing that doesn't seem perfect to me on my HK 45 USP. I'm a lefty and can only reach the saftey/decocker with some stretching.
So many guns, so little money . . .0 -
Thats what I read on the HK website not even 3 hours ago.But it does happen.

Judge Colt got me.In my haste I mis-read what it was saying. It says with a modular approach to internal components it may be swapped from right to left.

I was told by HK when I purchased my USP40 way back when that ambi controls could not be installed. It was either right or left hand only. Being left handed, I chose the left handed version where it can be carried cocked and locked or safety on with the hammer down.
From the responses is it true there is an ambi conversion?0 -
JudgeColt, Thanks for the information. Who did you have to contact to order the ambi kit? My plans are to install them on a pair of full size 40s.
Thanks to everyone for posting info.0 -
Whom to contact? Ah, there is the rub!
When I got ready to buy the parts, I naturally assumed that I could call H-K USA and buy the parts. Unfortunately, not so. I was given the name of the parts supplier, which was:
Specialized Protection Operations Group
Heckler & Koch Parts Department
1555 Route 37 E
Toms River, New Jersey 08753-5739
Armed with that information, I tried to call, but no one ever answered. I finally reached someone one time and that person said "Mark is traveling and will get back to you when he returns." He never did, so I tried again. I must have called and written a half-dozen times, and finally got to talk to Mark, who promnised to send the ambi kit out as soon as he was resupplied. It took another call or two, but I finally got the parts.
I seem to recall seeing something on the H-K Pro website:
http://boards.hkpro.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum&f=4
about ordering parts that leads me to believe the parts availabliity has improved, but do not recall what it was. I suggest you check there for information. It would also be wise to call H-K USA again to check on the current parts supplier. Good luck.0
