Are you talking about regular run of the mill capiscum spray?Does that really work?I would think it would piss one off worse then a .44mag or 45/70.It is surprising though if it works.

If you really want to live, stay out of the woods. Nobody on the previous thread said that pepper spray did not work. Better question would be does it really work. USFWS did some experimenting with pepper spray in the Alaska Penninsula area. Sprayed it on the ground all around their camp. Bears just came a rolled around in it. If you are using pepper spray, you have to be upwind of the bear. And the bear will already be within 25 feet when you use the spray because that is the effective range of it. In order for spray to work effectively you have to get it on the mucus membranes, if not your screwed after it gets that close if it is in fact a real charge and not a bluff charge. And if it turns out to be a real charge and it gets that close, you will never have a chance to draw your revolver of bring rifle to shoulder. A bear will cover 100 yards in about 4-5 seconds.

I have a Marlin Camp Carbine but would not think about it for bears
at all. I also have a old (?) Winch. Mod. 94 "Big Bore" .375 which
weighs about the same and would think about it for bears. That Winc.
.375 really has quite a knockdown power for its small size. I sometimes wonder how it stays together in that caliber.

I am a 45 man, love the 45acp cartrige. I have much success, with this round, for large 450-500pound hogs. And it penetrates their skulls, no problem. It would kill a bear if you put it right on his skull, at 2yds, or place it on his backside, just behind the heart.
But as much as I love it, I would not use it on a Grizzly. I know of
men that can kill a bear with a Knife, from the backside, and puncture, the heart, but they are seasoned, and know where to put the blade. Get a Bigger gun.

I back what Algore said. I heard from a biology professor at Lamar University about the black bears rolling around in the pepper spray. Apparently its a defense mechanism against other bears being the stinkiest bear on the block, and they think pepper spray stinks so they roll around in it.

Personally I'd vote for a high power revolver. Something fast on the draw that you can pull the trigger on really fast to put as much lead into it as possible and hope the bear bleeds out before its able to maul you really bad. Maybe a .44mag, .480ruger, or .454casual.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.
