Ithaca ejection

For starters there is no power difference between High Brass and Low Brass loads. You may just need to go with a heavier shot charge. You never mentioned which load(shot oz's) would not function but sounds like like some of the light loads that you can buy real inexpensively. That "lug" if I'm understanding you correctly is just the forearm nut.

Aglore has said what I would say. Look on the shell box. Most semi-autos require 1oz.-11/4oz. shot at 27/8-31/4 Drams Equivalent (powder charge). I believe it should also be printed on the shell hull. The lug holds the gun together, and should be hand-tight. The clicks are caused by the lock ring as it's tightened.

I have a Ithaca 37 12ga pump & when i use the short brass the gun will jam. When i use the long brass i have no problem with ejection.Since i very seldom use the short brass it is not a problem for me.So it sounds like a ithaca thing so stay with the high brass. Hunter

Is this a model 51 chambered for 3 inch. If so, a 2 3/4 load will
    not eject.

Hunter- I had a jamming Ithaca 37 Featherweight that I took up to the factory last Fall and Ithaca fixed it in 10 minutes. They charged me $50 for correcting a manufacturing defect that should have been done for free. I love the gun and can hit pretty good with it so I'm not all that unhappy.

Thanks to all of you. I dug out a box this a.m. when dropping off my trash and here is what it says: 3 1/4 dr.eq. 7/8 shot oz. #8 shot and they are Winchester Game Loads.Sounds like I better upgrade to something heavier. Thanks again.

Hunter- I'm pretty good with guns and mechanisms but the jamming baffled me. They at first told me the gun was picky about the brand of ammo but that wasn't true. After a lot of internal polishing and touching up,including reforming the lifter which deformed during a jam,the action was a lot smoother but it would still jam solid and refuse to unlock. I have only used low brass so far.
The factory gunsmith was tight lipped about the fix and came out after only a few minutes guaranteeing it was corrected. It looks like he took a light bevel grinding cut in the chamber because the finish is removed there. This would increase the headspace. Since the buttstock has to be removed to take the action apart I havent examined it yet to see what else he might have done. If I were to guess I'd say he changed the angle of the boltface or locking lug but that's speculation. Mine is a '65 Deluxe with ventilated rib.
