Marlin camp 45
i found a marlin camp 45 with 200 rounds of ammo for $250. i don't think i can pass this up unless someone (besides a know it all troll) can tell me some bad points. are they accurate? and up to what range. feeding reliabilty, and other general things. i own a couple marlins and i know they're quality rifles, but i've never shot or handled the camp. any info will be appreciated. cody

I'm trying to find an anti-bear weapon for fishing and I don't trust pistols or mase and my shotgun with slugs is to big and heavy. Would a marlin camp carbine in .45ACP with bear loads be a good, reliable and accurate rifle? If not any suggestions? What should I expect to pay? By the way I live in Wyoming outside of Yellowstone and Grizzlies are pentiful! 0 -
I would stay away from the .45acp for Griizzly there was a post nt too long ago about a man killed by a Grizzly who was carring a .45 when they found the Bear it had a .45 slug healed over in ts neck.Get you a Marlin 1894 Mini-Guide Lever Action in .44mag it holds 9 rounds and only has a 16 3/4" barrel weighs 6 pounds and you can shoot the 310 grain bullets with no problem. It will more than likely be cheaper then a Camp 45 runs these days anyway. If it doesnt scare it off its because its already dead.I think that would suit you best.If you want something even more easy to carry go for a Super Redhawk in .480Ruger.The Guide Gun would be best though. They also offer the 1895 in a 45/70 Guide Gun but its a little bigger and heavier.9 .44magnums should do what you seek.

If its a Semi-Auto you want take a look at the Remington 7400 18.5"brl,7 pounds and 4 shots of 30/06.Retail is around $450.00-$500.00.

The only problem is is that there are no Bear loads for the 45 acp. Eric gave you some good information. Any revolver chambered in 41 Mag and up with a very heavy for caliber hard cast bullet will work. You will probably have more problems with black bear than you would a grizzly. I travel quite a bit in bear country and feel quite comfortable carrying my 41 mag with 265 grain cast bullets, my 45 Colt with 370 grain cast bullets and most recently my 480 Ruger with 390 grain cast bullets.

The above guys are right. There is no such thing as a "bear load" in 45acp, and you would likely just piss off the bear anyway. A good revolver in 44 Mag would be my ticket. It keeps your hands free for fishing, and you always have it with you. An angry momma bear will not give much warning, and you may not have time to reach your carbine you left leaning on a nearby tree.

Just because it is my favorite gun that I don't own yet...
How about a Magnum Research BFR s/a revolver in 45/70 or
.444 Marlin? Compact with a lot of boom. I am told the recoil
is quite manageable due to the heavy 7" or 10" barrel

Why don't ya get hold of a little .30-30win or .44mag lever action maybe a Winchester Ranger Compact or something? Pretty light and compact. And plenty of bear have been killed with a .30-30win. Or maybe look into paying a $5 tax stamp for a registered AOW compact 12ga shotgun.

If ya want something light maybe look into something with synthetic stocks and an aluminum reciever.

The infamous 44 mag would be my choice of Handguns.I would choose the Marlin Guide Gun in 444 Marlin. But the .45acp is not a good Bear defensive weapon.
Best!!

Hi
I had the same problem as I hunt in AK I got a Marlin .444 and I think it will work great short light lever action 300 grain slug with a ton of stoping power and it will work great on pig or even elk in heavy brush. cost is $400 to $500 at gun shows and depends on new or used. You can also get in other cal 454 etc.

Though I have to agree that the .45acp isn't really the ideal bear stopper, it'd be like trying to shoot a deer with a .22lr, if its the only thing you got, then pull the trigger a few times and its at least bound to deter a bear, alot more than say that useless alaskan magnum pepper spray stuff.

If your going along that route, you might even consider a Ruger PC Carbine in a .40sw. Use some 180gr JHP ammo, and about 2 or three shots should do. Also hi-caps are readily available and fairly cheap for them.
