M48 Yugo vs. the Turk Mauser?

Both shoot 8mm, the most common Mauser round. The Yugos are newer and in better condition, although the Yugo is not necessarily more accurate. You can find a Turk in a gun shop for $75. A Yugo will go for 2 or 3 times that much.

Is your intention to collect or sporterize? Or, shoot "as is"? And, if to sporterize, to what extent? As stated above, you may find they shoot about the same, given equal condition. The Yugo is shorter and about the correct length to be used for a sporter "as is". You may run into some restocking problems as it is an "intermediate" length action, and you might have to special order a stock to fit properly. The Turk will probably require the services of a custom gunsmith to rebarrel if you decide to change calibers, as the barrel shank is of the older "small ring" dimensions on most (but not all) of them. But, there is nothing wrong with the original 8mm caliber. The Yugo has a bent bolt, but it is probably unsuitable to use with a low mounted scope. You might get by with one of the very high "see thru" scope mounts, but his raises most folks' cheek above the comb of the stock. The Turk bolt is straight and would require alteration for scope use. Were I to buy one to shoot "as is" I would get the Yugo. If cost is a concern I would get the Turk. If sporterizing, I would probably get the Turk because the only difference between the two in the long run for sporterizing purposes is that the Turk's barrel would have to be cut and recrowned. You'll probably wind up doing a bolt handle alteration anyway. If a collector, I would get both!

Most M48 and M48A are like new or close to it. Most turks are bottom of the barrel in terms of condition, but there are nice ones to be had if you look. The M48 is similar to the German K98K except for some minor fitting.

Geeez, you guys didn't leave much else to say about them!

I guess just be very aware that Turks are generally beat up with mis-matched numbers these have been carried a lot but shot little so they have good bores they are also easily re-stocked with pre-made commercial stocks ... while the Yugo, as noted by Der Gebirgsjager, is an "intermediate" length action, so you need to be aware of that when looking at the limited selection of aftermarket stocks available, but as noted by allen and jonk, are in much better condition so this may not be a concern.

These things are important to know if you are buying sight unseen so it can't be emphasized too much!

And also a word of caution ... they are as addictive as Lays Potato Chips ... one isn't enough

If you check the Brownells website, you will find a write-up on the various mausers. There are several differences with the Turk actions. One of the main ones is the barrel shank and thread. They aren't all standard pitch and it might cost twice as much to get an odd one rebarreled. I have found that the bolt parts are generally the same allowing the use of safeties and triggers for other types of mausers.

Doesn't the Yugo have a turned down bolt and the Turk is straight?

I might not always tell you the truth, but I will never lie to you!
