Hi Capacity Mags - Legal or Illegal????
A while ago on GB I purchased a Ruger KP-89 Pistol that was advertised as with 2 factory mags and 1 30 rd mag.
Today I loaded the mags for the range and find they hold 15 rounds of 147 Grain JHP ammunition each making my pistol capacity 15 + 1. I know the date of manufacture of the pistol to be 9/92 (per Ruger) but the mags are devoid of any manufacturer identification. Would factory Ruger Mags for a P series pistol have Ruger on them? I would think these mags are legal based on the manufacture date as being pre ban but if I decide to sell the pistol and mags can I advertise hi-cap and is it legal?
What do you experts think or advise????

They should be perfectly legal as long as there is no evidence of someone trying to grind off the 'For Law Enforcement Use Only' warning had they been LEO mags.

When buying a new gun, remember, it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission.0 -
Unless they are illegal due to your own States law (like California), they are legal on the Federal level. Post ban mags are maked "law enforcement only" or "export only". The absence of marking makes them okay. It's fine to sell them with the pistol. It's fine to use them. Just don't shoot anybody.

They are legal to own unless the above mentioned Apply. If they are factory pre bans they will have the Ruger Logo on the Base of the Magazine.Congratulations on your purchase of a fine Handgun.
Best!!!

The early mags didn't have any indentification on them.
I willing to bet the serial number on your gun is 304-7XXXX or less.
Two months ago I bought a New In Box P-89 (comes with two fifteen round mags with no ID on them)and the serial number on that is less than the one on my P-85MKll.

Thanks for all of the info. This is a great forum and the Price is right.
Yes, RugerNiner the serial # on my pistol is 304-437XX.
It is a wonderful handgun and it fits my big hands and it was a bargain, Who needs a Glock or a Sig when this American made handgun and its profits accrue to an American tax paying corporation. I think this weapon is underrated.
Again thanks for the responses and the info.
Of course I like small animals....especially when prepared in a savory gravey!!0 -
Then your gun came with unmarked 15 round mags.
I have 1-P85, 1-P85MKll, 2-P89's, 1-P90, 1-P94 and 1-P95
