Springfield Break IN Period?
Was wondering how many rounds one should shoot through a Springfield 1911 before it can be relied on as a carry gun?
Thanks in Advance!!

I like to run a thousand rounds through it, Before using it as a defence tool. It gives the parts time to wear togeather,If any parts were to fatige or be out of spec, It should show up in this time, Also allows you to get familiar with it, And build confidence in your new tool.
Use the ammo you will be using in it as a carry tool.
I found that alot of handguns reliability falls off after 500 rounds, Take it apart and clean it, Its reliable for another 500 rounds. I found this most true with alloy framed pistols. I have a few models that I havent found the limit to as were it needs to be taken apart and cleaned, And these are all steel slide and frame. Beware of alloy framed pistols for reliability in dirty conditions. Also, The shorter the barrel, The gun gets dirty faster due to un-burned gases, This reduces reliability too.
Always keep your tool clean, As though you had to eat off of it.
My answer to your question is 1000 rounds mininum, And try and do it without cleaning it, to learn its characteristics.

I guess I am in between SP and hotrodusa. I have always fired at least 200 rounds though every Semi-auto I have owned as a "break in"
test. I then fire 150-200 rounds of what I intend to load it with for self defense. If it passes that test, I am comfortable with using it for a self defense firearm.

Thanks for the imput,I am taking your advice.Springfield said to put 200 rds threw it but thats pretty expensive, even though I reload but you cant put a price on your family's life. Its a shame Hand Gun makers dont all follow CZ.They dip their Hand Guns in oil while a machine racks the slide a Minimum of 10,000 times to remove any burs ad to break the gun in so its ready out of the Box.
Thanks!!

I was going to say about 10,000 rounds ... but then I'm not sure if Springfields are ever suitable for carry >>> but I wont say it ... ooops, I guess I already did
You do know I'm kidding ... don't you?
I've heard Kimber reccomends 500 for everything to really smooth out ... but I've never had to do shoot than 100-200 ... except my Pro Carry CDP when racking the slide slowly it felt a little gritty until around 800 rounds ... it was completely reliable out of the box though!

KimberKid,I have something that might be of interest to you.If you dont respond to this I will post it in your Name. The Tacoma Washington PD.went in search of a new side arm and their firearms instructor was partial to the 1911,they tested a total of 30 some guns and he got upstairs to approve the Kimber 1911.Officers had a choice (Hard to believe)Between it and the Glock Models 21,22 and the Model 23.One Hundred odd number of Officers chose the Glocks. The Majority chose the Kimber with Wilson Mags. Each Officer was furnished 4 extra 7RD Mags.Thought it would be a ego Boost,we all deserve one once and a while.

Ever since I bought my first glock and saw the anti-sieze they put around the interior of the slide for it to break in better, I've been putting it on all my new guns. Don't know if it makes a real big difference, but haven't had any problems so I'll continue doing it. I'd say if you get a new springfield, do so also, it can only help.
If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

rugster - Thanks for that bit of info ... its good to hear! I think usually the Kimber is priced too high to be concidered for most P.D.'s when compared to guns like the Glock with their proven reputation and higher capacity mag, its hard to justify.
Good call on replacing the Kimber factory mags ... they are OK for practicing mag changes but thats about it ... never could figure out why they sell a premium pistol with a junk mag ...

I was told 500 rd by the dealer I purchased my 1911 from. It took about 300 rd for my springfield to stop stove piping the empties. 0
