A lot of people will tell you there is no difference between pre-ban M1A price and post ban price. The basis for this is that most people who buy an M1A are interested in accuracy and aren't interested in the bayonet lug anyway. This phylosophy sometimes sticks and sometimes doesn't. I have seen pre-ban M1As sell for very reasonable amounts, on the other hand I sometimes see them bring a bit of a premium, but probably not what one would expect for a pre-ban rifle.

I've seen them sell in the range of $800 to $900 here in the midwest, at local gun and pawn shops. They ususally have a few extras with them, spare mags and such thrown in. But I think that's a pretty low figure. I watch for them at that price but they don't come around too often, and it seems like when they do I don't have the money. On internet auctions they seem to bring about $1,100 to around $1,250, as a ballpark figure.

Myself, I don't agree that they aren't worth a "pre-ban premium" but there are a lot of people who keep saying this, and buying/selling them on that basis. That's nice for bargain hunters and I hope it stays that way for a while, but think eventually that will turn around some.

One nice feature of gunbroker auction is you can do a search for old auctions using the custom search feature. The link for the special search feature is the word "search" on the gunbroker home page. You can check prices using selected key-words back some 90 days. Use key words such as "m1a pre-ban" or "m1a preban" in that special search feature and some should pop up. Those you see that have sold will give you a real sense of what people are willing to pay.

To err is human, to moo is bovine.
