Steyr Model GB
Anyone know why Steyr discontinued this model? I think it is a great gun and its my favorite 9mm Luger pistol. I bought mine new back in the 80's and never had any problems with it to this day - but it disappeared from the market. Why?

Typically because there is not enough demand for them >>> and like most Steyrs, command a premimum price >>>

The GB is my favorite centerfire pistol. I am not sure what KK means by not enough demand, but commands a premium price. Supply and demand usually determine the price. Today, GB pistols sell as used guns for more than they cost new. One went for $1800 on the auction site recently. (It had several magazines and a muzzle brake, but it had only one bidder so I am suspicious of ignorance or shilling.)
The GB was controversial from the start (remember the awful Rojak ripoff?), and was designed for military trials. It failed in military trials against the Glock in its homeland of Austria and in the US trials, so the commercial and police market were its only hope. It cost more than other pistols (this may be what KK meant) during the "Wonder 9" era and was so big that it was not very successful commercially and was ignored by the police market.
However, once you shoot one, you are ruined for any other 9x19. It is very accurate and very soft shooting. The 18+1 magazine capacity is a nice touch. The double-feed magazines are so much easier to load than the typical single-feed magazines. The grip angle and shape are perfect. The sights are excellent. Disadvantages to me are the problems with shooting lead bullets (lead coats the gas-retard system) and lack of a safety. (The pistol has a right-handed decocker only.)
I have one I bought new, and another I bought used. As I said, the GB is my favorite centerfire handgun. Anyone who can accept a 9x19 will be very well served with a GB.0 -
Judgecolt: I couldn't have said it any better - I totally agree with you. Everything about the GB is "top quality" and it is also my favorite 9mm pistol. Thanks for the response.

Judge, thanks for clarifying that!
Demand while they were in production was low because of the cost, the failure in military trials also did nothing to boost sales ... I believe that because the Glock was viewed as a superior firearm and less expensive (and also made in Austria) sealed its fate ... now of course, with supply being limited, the price soars!
I've handled a few and had several opportunities to acquire a GB and didn't ... so now I just kick myself

KK, there is one on the auction site right now. Maybe it is time to correct your oversight? 0 -
Judge,
Thanks for the heads-up, I emailed him for his reserve ... thats a game I don't like to play unless the seller will reveal it, if he does I may bid >>>
