Make sure you buy one that takes standard high cap. mags. Some you see that look like a good price don't the standard mags. Not such a good deal if you realize this after you bought the gun.

In my opinion, save your money and buy a Vepr Ak-47 style rifle from Robinson Arms. These are the best ak's out there, and, while they will cost more than 450 dollars, its would be better to save up for a little while longer than be stuck with a cheap romanian parts gun.

Vepr is from Russia (I think), and as I understand it uses a synthetic stock rather than wooden. I kind of like the wooden, but I'm old fashioned. But I've never heard anyone complain that the Romanian ones don't work, only that the Russian ones are more accurate. So are they enough more accurate that the extra $ are justified for the average buyer? After all, we aren't talking about a Garand or AR-15 match rifle here, just a fun shooter also good for home defense at short range.

There is a good web sight: ak-47.net that has tons of info.
I have a Maddi (Egyptian) that shoots like a house on fire with the traditional wood and takes Hi caps. Painted sheet metal, paid $300. a couple of years ago. I run a couple hundred rounds threw it every now and then. It takes longer to load than to shoot. Lots of fun.

Mak-90...I have one and even used it for deer hunting. Shot a deer at 150 yards...so thats accurate enough for me. I put a cheap little scope on it and it works pretty good but if I were to do it again I would put one of those PSO scopes on it. They accept high cap mags and mine also has the thumbhole stock which I think feels more natural. I was also considering the SAR-1 but heard the stock is rather short and awkward. mak-90 is in your price range...let us know what you decide.

I agree with quamnet, i have a MAK and love it. Shoots very well and is surprisingly accurate for the 'notoriosly inaccurate' AK. However, they seem to be getting tough to find and usually command close to $500, though that may just be around here. I used to see them on Gunbroker for around $350 on average. Definately a lot nicer looking than an SAR-1. I also find the stock shoulders much better on the MAK than the SAR, but I'm a tall guy.

Hi guys and thanks for honest advise.
Reading this post I got to ponder if I should buy a mak or add a little and got for Vepr. U see I am a little of a collector and as you said mak 90 are getting hard to get and more expensive every time I look at them. I don?t mine to wait and save extra 150$ for a vepr. But I always wanted to own a real AK (too many commando/Vietnam movies I guess). I you would have to choose would you go for Mak-90 or save and go for vepr. I own few bolt action rifles so as far it goes I am looking at fun shooting (100/150 yards tops). Any way how much better vepr is (accurate, quality/finish ect.)
PS. Any one owns the super vepr(308call fluted barrel)
    Thanks Mark

I like the Romanian one myself: Most like the real one that I found.

I didn't realize the Mak-90 was climbing in price that much. I got mine two years ago new in the box with all the extras and paid $300. Maybe I got a deal....

yeap they are growing in price and there is not alot of them there anymore. 300$ that's a fantastic deal considering that a used one runs for 375$ to 450 hell i saw one or two preban 94/93 production on gunbroker for as much as 600+ i don't know eather they are special ones or the guy is trying to get some one
any way after i got my house robbed i need something to keep the rats out( u know what i mean) i think that mak will serve this purpose.

Also, I think joeken.com has Russian AK47's with wood stock you might want to check into. They are an alternative to the VEPR, buy for myself, think the VEPR is a fine rifle.

Opps, my mistake. The joeken guns are synthetic stocks.
