The 6mmRemington is alive and well. It started life as the 244 Remington but originally had a twist(1-12") that suited the lighter varmint bullets well but not the heavier deer bullets. Remington changed the twist rate and renamed the cartridge the 6mmRemington. It is a good all around cartridge and if you want to get a good discussion going try to convince a bunch of people that the 6mm or the 243 Win is king of the 6mm hill! Not very much difference in the effectiveness of the 243 and 6mm. Kinda of like "a nickle of one and 5 cents of the other". Yes rifles are still chambered for this round by most manufacturers. GHD

I would like to have a good 6mm,seen a guy take a coyote at least 200yrds off.And it retained enough energy to roll the coyote, and make a good clean kill.I would rather have the 6mm than the .243 Win.

    Best!!

the 243 or 6mm is an excellent for coyotes..i was disking wheat stubble couple days ago when a coyote run across the field. my win 70 heavy barrel in .243 win mounted in a choate varmint stock was in the pickup, i grabbed the rifle jumped in my 8440 (JD 4 wheeel drive) went to the top of the hill that the coyote run over there he stood i turned the tractor to the left to use the hood as a rest pulled down on him and shot i stepped it off and was 295 steps for me which would be right at 300 yds one shot with 15mph cross wind with a 55 grain nosler bal tip out of my .243 the coyote hit the ground dead.

I would not trade, sell my 6mm for anything. I love just to shoot it. It has taking deer up close (75 yds.) and it has taking at 225 yds. It has taking rabbit and left meat on it. Love it best of anything I own.

If you need a Second Shot, YOU NEED MORE PRACTICE

I know from whence I speak!! I have sent more groundhogs their airmail invitations home with a 243 and 75gr Speer HP than most of our pickups will haul!! The 243 is not my favorite varmint caliber! Good, Great maybe but there's others out there just as good. I built a 6mmRemington for a friend of mine last year with a "finished 28" barrel". The barrel was a Shilen Match barrel and indicated less than 2/10000variance in lands and grooves. He was and still is quite pleased as he has to date over 25 documented and witnessed kills over 1000 yards!! If I had chambered that barrel for that action in 243 he would probably still have made the shots! Both of those 6mm's will do a great job if the gun's right. And Cowdoc, As I'm writing this I'm ringing wet with sweat as I have been working on a forage harvester all day and now have to shower and drive 3 hours to take the oldest daughter to college! Ain't it fun to keep a good gun in the tractor or the pickup?!!! GHD

My friend has a 6mm rem.. I've seen him kill alot of deer with it. Him and his dad went out west on a prong horn hunt and he shot 1 at 343 yards with it!!! His guide had a range finder told him he knew his gun ,if he knew he could take it go ahead and take it. He took it!!! Its a nice Remington 700bdl.

6MM REM IS AN EXCELLENT VARMIT ROUND BUT MARGINAL FOR DEER IN THE 160# RANGE AND UP. VS THE .243 IT HAS SLIGHTLY MORE CAPACITY AND A LONGER NECK FOR BETTER SEATING AND LONGER BULLETS. HAVE USED 75 GR HP SPEER FOR VARMITS ALSO WITH GREAT SUCCESS. 85 GRAIN SIERRA BTHP FOR BEST ACCURACY AND 100-105 GR SPEER/SIERRA FOR DEER (LOST 3 AND SWITCHED TO .270 REM SIERRA 130 GR GAME KING WITH 100% RESULTS)

.243 HAS EDGE IN BRASS AS G.I. 308 CAN BE NECKED DOWN IN ONE STEP AND FACTORY IS EASY TO LOCATE IN A VARIETY OF WEIGHTS.

LOVE MY 6MM BUT IT IS A REAL EARLY RUGER 77 - A MATTER OF TASTE.
