Its pretty hard to give someone a pattern on how to build a tree stand, because you would need to see the trees have measurements etc.But I find a forked tree,I have tried using two trees but the wind destroys them pretty quickley.o find one tree with suitable forks, build your floor out of 2/6 lumber for strength.I recommend screwing them to the tree using large washerson your bolt head. Then floor it with something that is more than adequite in strength.I build my steps out of trees in the woods maybe 3in in diameter. This makes your stand stick out less.Build it way in advance to Deer Season,so they can become used to it.I also like to put side rails around mine.I am assuming you are doing this on private land,it is illegal on National Forest, and you have the land owners permission. Now If you want the best stand Ive seen buy a Tree Lounge you can move it around, and I feel its much safer and more comfortable.

    Good Luck

I have a metal ladder stand, which I bought 12 yrs ago for $50. The ladder is 10 feet high, then there is a platform 20 inches wide at the top. The platform does not come off at a 90 degree angle, it is about a 105 degree angle, so that you can move the bottom of the laddder away from the tree,so that the ladder is not straight up and down, but at an angle, and the platform will be level. You just tie it around the tree with a 1/4" rope. They are bulky to carry through the woods, but they are safe to use. They are used a lot in Ga. You can go up and down the ladder with little noise.

"Not as deep as a well, or as wide as a church door, but it is enough."

The neatest stand I ever had, I built between two trees. A black spruce and a white pine. There were so many branches that I had to cut some out to get up. (deer & passing hunters saw nothing!) It was 35 feet up. I built a floor of 2x6's on a 2x12 floor joist set upbetween the two trees and a handy branch. I had two seats, a table AND a roof! Lots of great times and several nice deer, too. Last winter they slash cut the whole area, but they did leave one of the two trees ... I'm sure the white birch fell kinda funny and they looked up to see what was happpening!

I like allen griggs stand. I am fond of the ladder stand. You could buy one of these at a sporting goods store, or Next time you go to your favorite sporting goods store take a ruler along with paper and pencil, Take som dimensions. you can modify to suite your needs.
I'd go at least 12 feet high or more. Usualy catalogs such as redhead has treestands, you can pretty much look at the pictures and figure out whats gonna work best for you, As fare as dimensions goes. You han make a dummy out of cardboard and match it to the trees you will be using it in.The cardboard template would work good for a stand with a V shape butted up to the tree too. you can buy inexpencive adjustable tie-downs to hold it up in the tree.
I dont think much of putting screws or nails in a tree, More then once I've cut into an old tree with a chain saw and ruined my saw blade.Check prices of material in your area before getting to involved in making your stand. It might be better to just buy one and it will be a done deal. As mentioned above the tree lounge stand is a nice one.

gskyhawk, i just was watching the tree lounge tv show today and for the basic tree lounge they were getting $269. Then there are all types of accessories you can buy for it that could cost well above the $500 range if you went crazy. You really only need the bow hunting platform and gun holder, etc. As far as your father-in-law's stand it is hard to say because I know that a few years ago re-designed the tree lounge to make it lighter and added a few extra features. So it you have the new design I would think you could very easily get the $269 for brand new in the box.(Thats not including any accessories he might have) As far as the old design, like I have which I love the way it is, I would still say roughly $200 or probably more if you get the right buyer. My personal opinion if I were you is to take it off his hands yourself.........Hope that helps, but if it doesn't you could go on their website and find all the exact prices. www.treelounge.com

quamnet: thanks for the info, I check with my father-in-law last night to see which one it was, it is the older model and it has the bow hunters platform and high angle pad, and bow holder,, I see what you mean by the re-design, i was at a local clubs field day on sat. and they had one on display, nice green color, the reason my f.i.l. does'nt use it is because hes getting to old and is afraid he would get hurt , asked him what he would like to get out of it and he really did'nt say, but knowing that they are both getting up in years and maining just have S.S. for income, the more the better,, I will have to see if maybe he would let me take some pictures of it and listed it for sell,, thanks again
