Rifled Barrel for Remington 870
I would like to replace my factory 870 barrel with a rifled barrel. I'm wondering what barrel would be best. I do plan on using a scope. I'm looking for accuracy information. What kind of accuracy and range can I expect? Price?? What slugs are recommended for elk. Is the recoil of a shotgun comparable with a magnum rifle? (Has anyone ever measured this?) I'm wondering about recoil because of scope crosshair longevity. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Remington is awfully proud of there replacement barrels. It has been cheaper for me to find a decent used 870 with the barrel I want, than to purchase a new barrel from remington.
As far as useing a slug for elk hunting, I must admitt I haven't ever heard of anyone doing that. I realize a 12 guage slug is devistating and pretty darn accurate to at least 100 yrds, but I don't think the law allows elk hunting with a shotgun in this state anyway.
The recoil from a 3" slug out of a 18" rifled barrel "will" get your attention. Don't make the same mistake I made and let your 108 pound girlfriend shoot it. All she did was glare at me for 2 days.0 -
Hastings makes a nice rifled barrel for it. You want a cantilever scope mount, which attaches to the barrel, not the action, that way you can take the barrel off and use it for other things, then put the barrel back on and it's still sighted in.
A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.0 -
I have to agree with Weatherby 270 Mag,I would buy a new Rem slug gun or get a Rem factory barrel. As for the best slugs I would try several different types to see which your gun shoots best.I would expect at least 100yrd range with your gun sighted in for that range. Recoil is generaly not a problem, but if it is you can always put a recoil pad on your gun,and that should take care of recoil.Buy a good Scope and it will with stand recoil.
Best!!

I have a 870 with a fully rifled barrel. Mine has an over the reciever scope mount I never had any problems with it. But, I would recommend buying the cantalever barrel. Simple reason those over the reciever mounts cost around 50 bucks so paying for the cantalever would be better. As far as slugs I use the Lightfield Hybred sabot exp. slugs. 2 3/4 inch 1 1/4 oz slug. As far as in my gun out of 6 different sabots they shot the best and believe it or not they were the cheapest. Those winchester partition golds shot well too but they where $12 for 5 verses $ 6.49 for the light fields. I use the 2 3/4 they shot better than the 3 inchers and kicked alot less. Those slug guns do have a kick to them. 0 -
Thanks for all of the great input. I'll let you know how the barrel works out for me as well as the ammo suggestions. It's so nice to be able to bounce this off of people who have done it before.
