.50 BMG rifles for a moderate price?
I have decided that for one reason or another i want to purchase a .50 bmg caliber rifle for long range shooting. Can anyone make a suggestion as to rifles chambered in this caliber that are inexpensive (in comparison to a barrett or macmillan)? say maybe in the 1000 to 2500 price range. a simple single shot would be just fine and it doesnt have to be fancy as long as it shoots well and wont require selling my truck to pay for it. thanks in advance

FCSA maintains a list of vendors who make rifles, ammo and accessories for the 50 BMG. I'd suggest you start by contacting the ones that interest you and work from there. The URL is http://www.fcsa.org/vendors.html. You should also spend some time over on biggerhammer and read about 50's - there was a recent thread there of one that fired and a part of the gun seriously injured the shooter. It's a big cartridge and you need to be careful that you don't buy something that will hurt you. The URL for biggerhammer is http://www.biggerhammer.net/barrett/wwwboard/
I've only shot/owned McBros and Barrett rifles so I can't personally recommend anything like what you're looking for.0 -
If you have a ar15, I would check into the .50 bmg uppers. Some of them look like junk, but some look very good.

Have you considered the Armalite 50 BMG? I know that they are back ordered, but they are a little less pricey at around $2500.

The .50BMG is so expensive to shoot even if you reload it still cost more than Im willing to pay. However John Browning desighned it to be reliable, and that it is.
Best!!!

You know for a person like me, who invests time and money
into, deer hunting, and the deer are 1000 yards away.
The 50 is the ticket, full metal case, minimizing, any
extra damage, that could occur with a soft point, and assurance
that, you wont go home empty handed. Nothing worse than getting
skunked.0 -

You didn't mention what type of long range shooting you're interested in - if it's 1000 yd. target shooting there are good guns you can get that cost quite a bit less than the $2500 you mentioned. They do a great job at that range. The advantage of the 50 at long range is the bullets at deliver a lot of energy to the target.
Hunting with the 50 is prohibitted where I live (Idaho) - I believe the restriction isn't on the caliber but the weight of the gun must be under 16 lbs. and having a couple of 50's I'm not interested in shooting a light weight model.
The FCSA publication (Very High Power) had a story about a guy in Az. that hunted elk with a 50. He'd set up a table, range his shooting lanes and sit and wait. It was years ago when I read the article, but I recall he got a couple at over 900 yds.
I know a fellow here who bags elk every year at over 800 yds - he's shooting wildcats and reguarly shoot in the 1000 yds shoots over in Montana.0 -
Federal Arms Corp sells one around the $1300.00 range. 0 -
joeken.com has them for around $1200, for complete rifles. In Shotgun News they (joeken.com) have them listed for $999, I don't know if the price went up or what. They are Hesse, so the quality might be something you'd want to find out about. Suppose to have sub-moa accuracy out to 1000 yards and beyond....
