Hello Doc,It's was originaly the 416 Rigby, they changed the thikness of the case web(internally)that was when the name changed from 338-416 sniper(as it was first offered to the USMC for trial)to 338 Lupua. The USMC accepted the modified version(early 80s).As far as I know the outside dementions are still the same.I will find out soon,My reamer says 338 Lupua and my dies say 338-416 sniper.Probably more than you wanted to know.I've been dieing to build this thing, just haven't had time.Regards& Good hunting,Roger--heckmanj@ptsi.net 0 -
poopah is correct. This is caliber is becoming mor and more popular as time goes on. Govt has done lots of testing with this caliber, There's lots of talk it will be the next official military round put in use. They wanted someting less then the 50 for sniper work.
It is a very potent round, Thay made the case real thick to handle high pressures, like 6500 psi.
If you have a vihtavuori oy reloading book (second edition) they have reloading data for the 338 lapua mag.
The military has this round in use now, Just not very widely known. They did some testing with a necked down 50 cal bmg round to 338 cal. also, Dont know what happened to that idea though.
Hay poopah, I wish I had one of those 338 lapua mags in the works, You got me thinking... Could you please let us know what you are using for an action. I was looking at a weatherby action to build mine.0 -
hotrodusa,Have had a Brevex for several years, finally found a use for it.Also have a nice Rem P-14 action, was thinking about barreling it to play with as single shot while building the other.Planning on useing machine rest to test P-14 action(not sure about strength).I really don"t have a desire to put this one to my shoulder anyway.I am very interested in the accuracy and perfomance.I bet you would have great luck with the Weatherby.Have a good one guys. 0 -
Thanks poopah, this was a very exciting topic for me. One more thing, In the past If I recall right Mcmillan bros rifle co.,Inc. was tinkering with the 338 lapua mag in one of there actions, Anyhow, When I saw the article I got so involved in reading I didnt get anything else accomplished that day, Imagine that !!!

I have heard that the major complaint with this round in the military is that the recoil is turning otherwise great shooters into guys who flinch.
A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.0
