I cant tell any real difference in the Pattering of my model 870 Wingmaster, and mt Rem 1100 if I use the same load, and choke in each gun.Myself the only recoil differece I can tell between the two is if Im shooting 3 IN Magnums. Then the recoil loss is not reduced a great deal.

There isn't any loss in performance in an auto, it just uses gas that was going to be waisted anyway. The only downfall is that it has to have enough gas pressure to blow back otherwise it won't function, thats the only lack in reliability. In otherwords as long as you aren't handloading super low pressure loads, you should be ok. And I can say that there is at least a little bit of reduction in recoil, but it still kicks, so you have to just put it to your shoulder and take it, or get something smaller.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

The sound of a 12 gauge pump clears a house fatser than Rosie O eats a Big Mac !

There aren't any free rides. The energy that works the system has to come from somewhere. However the amount is so small that the practical difference is negligable.
The difference in felt recoil is caused by the inertia of the moving parts. This lengthens the recoil impulse & although the total amount is the same, the peak impulse is lower. (This is the same effect that a recoil pad has.)

A lot of felt recoil comes from several things..First and formostg is the reaction to the noise of the firearm itself..with proper stance, proper mount and focus on the target...should help releave felt recoil..being an instructor with youth shooting programs this is the most common fear..once they follow the proper steps mentioned above and with success in hitting the first target...recoil is nothing...but the 1100 youth model is prefered over the pump action..there is some relief.
